வால்மீகி இராமாயணம், அயோத்தியா காண்டத்திலிருந்து. முதுமை அடைந்த தசரதன், இராமனுக்கு இளவரசுப் பட்டம் சூட்ட விரும்பினான். ஆனால் தானே முடிவு செய்யவில்லை. நாட்டின் எல்லாப் பகுதிகளிலிருந்தும் மன்னர்களையும் மூத்தோரையும் நகர மக்களையும் அவைக்கு அழைத்தான்.
“நான் நீண்ட காலம் ஆண்டுவிட்டேன். இராமனை இளவரசனாக்க விரும்புகிறேன். இது உங்களுக்குச் சரியெனப் பட்டால் ஒப்புதல் தாருங்கள்; வேறு வழி நல்லதெனில் அதையும் சொல்லுங்கள்” என்றான்.
அவை முழுவதும் மகிழ்ந்து ஒப்புக் கொண்டது. இராமனின் பண்புகளை ஒவ்வொன்றாகப் போற்றி, “அவனே எங்கள் அரசனாக வேண்டும்” என்றனர். நாடு ஒப்பியதையே மன்னன் செய்தான்; அதனால்தான் இராமன் காட்டிலிருந்தபோதும் மக்கள் மனத்தில் அரசனாகவே இருந்தான்.

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda. Grown old, Dasharatha wished to make Rama crown prince. But he did not decide alone. He called kings, elders and citizens from every part of the land to an assembly.
"I have ruled a long time. I wish to make Rama crown prince. If this seems right to you, give your approval; if another way seems better, tell me that too."
The whole assembly joyfully agreed. Praising Rama's virtues one by one, they said, "He must be our king." The king did what the land approved, and that is why, even while Rama was in the forest, he remained king in the hearts of the people.
