Valmiki Ramayana, Bala KandaRama Goes with Vishvamitra
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. The sage Vishvamitra came to Ayodhya and asked Dasharatha, "Rakshasas are spoiling my sacrifice. Send Rama with me to protect it." Dasharatha was afraid and hesitated to part with his young son.
The family preceptor Vasishtha counselled him: "With Vishvamitra beside him, no harm can come to Rama. He knows every divine weapon." Dasharatha sent Rama and Lakshmana.
On the way, on the bank of the Sarayu, Vishvamitra taught Rama the mantras Bala and Atibala, which banish hunger and fatigue. Later he bestowed many divine weapons. That journey, taken in the company of the great, led to Rama's valour and to his marriage with Sita.
