Explanation

This verse makes its point through a comparison. It is well known that wealth does not stay with the envious, and in the same way, says Valluvar, elevation does not stay with the person without conduct. Aakkam is prosperity or growth, and uyarvu is social standing. Envy eats the heart and fixes the eye on others' growth, so the envious fail to tend their own. In the same way, loss of conduct eats away a person's standing from inside.

Some commentators connect the verse to the later chapter on not envying. Valluvar firmly believed that wealth is absent in the envious. Here he sets lack of conduct beside it as equally harmful. Both are inner defects, and inner defects destroy a person more surely than outer enemies.

In modern organisations this is easy to observe. People who rose to high posts through ability lose them in a single day through lapses in conduct. A post is an outer elevation, while conduct is the inner foundation that makes it last. A building without a foundation collapses, however tall it may be. So Valluvar advises us to build character first and trust position to follow, since position without character is borrowed and will be called back by circumstance.

A story

The Fall of Duryodhana

This is the career of Duryodhana as told in the Sabha Parva and Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata. The prince of Hastinapura had wealth and armies at his command, and counsellors such as Karna, Shakuni and Dushasana stood with him. But in his heart there was always envy of the Pandavas.

At the Rajasuya sacrifice, when he saw the wealth of Indraprastha and the honour the Pandavas had won, he could not bear it. He lamented to his father Dhritarashtra, "Their prosperity burns my heart; life has no meaning for me without it." This envy led him to the crooked game of dice.

In the game, through Shakuni's trickery, the Pandavas lost their kingdom, wealth and finally Draupadi. Duryodhana thought he had won. But the insult to Draupadi in the assembly was the peak of his misconduct. Elders such as Bhishma, Vidura and Drona hung their heads, and the whole court condemned him.

After the exile, when Krishna went as a messenger asking for just five villages for the Pandavas, Duryodhana refused even as much land as a needle's point could cover. His rank and armies were great, but his conduct did not support them.

In the war at Kurukshetra his armies were destroyed. He hid alone in a lake and was finally struck down by Bhima. The elevation he had sought through envy and misconduct did not stay with him. The story shows exactly what the verse says.
