Explanation

The image of the seed gives this verse its life. A seed may look small, yet a great tree lies folded inside it. Good conduct is such a seed: a small good habit today will grow into great good tomorrow. Bad conduct too is a seed, and what it yields is always sorrow. Nanri, 'goodness', is taken by some as virtue, by others as wealth, by others as general good. In any case the thought is that conduct is the root of every good.

A seed takes time to bear fruit, so the results of conduct may not appear at once. A good deed may bring no reward on the spot, and a bad deed may bring no immediate punishment. Seeing this, some people lose faith in conduct. But a farmer does not expect a harvest on the day he sows. The image teaches us to wait for the fruit of conduct with patience.

A student who sows the habit of studying a little every day reaps the harvest at the end of the year. A trader who deals honestly and steadily earns the trust of people, and over many years he acquires loyal customers. Others may amass money quickly by cheating, but what remains with them is restless sorrow. So each day we should ask what seed we are planting. The harvest will come in its season, and it will be of the same kind as the seed. Valluvar wants us to think of ourselves as gardeners of our own future.

A story

Vibhishana's Dharma

This story comes from the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Vibhishana, brother of Ravana, was born in Lanka and raised among the rakshasas. Even in youth he performed austerities and is said to have asked Brahma for the boon that his mind should always stay on dharma. He grew up with fine conduct and good sense.

When Ravana carried off Sita, Vibhishana advised his brother again and again. "Brother, to seize another man's wife will destroy our whole line. Return Sita to Rama." Ravana would not listen. In the assembly he insulted Vibhishana, kicked him and drove him out.

Vibhishana left Lanka with four ministers and came seeking refuge with Rama. Many in the vanara army looked at him with suspicion. Sugriva and others said, "He may be an enemy spy." But Rama said, "I will never turn away one who comes to me for refuge, even if it were Ravana himself." Hanuman, reading the truth in Vibhishana's face, spoke for him.

Rama accepted him and, that very day, anointed him king of Lanka with sea water. In the war Vibhishana's counsel often brought victory. After Ravana fell, Vibhishana ruled Lanka justly. When he hesitated to perform the last rites of Ravana, Rama himself advised, "Enmity ends with death; he was your brother, perform the rites."

Vibhishana's good conduct, though he was born among rakshasas, brought him a kingdom, fame and lasting respect. Ravana, who stood in bad conduct, destroyed his own line. The story shows clearly that good conduct is the seed of all good.
