Explanation

Vizhuppam means excellence and high regard. Since conduct is what gives a person this regard, Valluvar says it must be guarded more than life. This may sound severe, for we usually think that without life nothing is possible. But our tradition held that honour and righteousness outweigh mere survival. The underlying thought is that a short life lived with right conduct is more admirable than a long one lived without it.

Commentators generally take ozhukkam to mean good conduct. Parimelazhagar and some others widen it to the code suited to one's family and stage of life. However it is understood, its core is clear: it is the practice of not straying from the right path, and it is what wins a person elevation and the respect of those around him. That we are asked to guard it even more carefully than life shows how highly it is valued.

The same holds today. If a clerk, a teacher or an officer loses integrity, people will not fully trust him again, however skilled he may be. Someone who has stood firm in conduct is respected even in poverty. Money and position, once lost, can be rebuilt, but honesty and good name, once lost, are very hard to recover. This is why Valluvar speaks of guarding conduct as a sentry guards a gate. It is not about perfection but about the refusal to trade our integrity for a convenient moment, because that exchange can never be reversed.

A story

Rama's Exile

This scene comes from the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. The day for Rama's coronation had been fixed, and the whole city was hung with garlands and flowers. Then Kaikeyi asked King Dasharatha for the two boons he had once promised her: that Rama go to the forest for fourteen years and that Bharata be crowned.

Dasharatha collapsed on hearing it. Rama came in and saw his father's state. When Kaikeyi told him what had been decided, Rama's face did not change. "Father's word must not be proved false. I accept this gladly," he said, laying aside his royal robes and putting on bark garments. Ayodhya wept. Lakshmana burned with anger. "Father is old and has been caught in Kaikeyi's net. Command me, and I will seize the kingdom," he said.

Rama calmed him. "Brother, dharma is keeping one's word. The kingdom is nothing to me; my father's word is everything. If a promise is broken today, tomorrow no promise will be trusted." Sita and Lakshmana followed him into the forest.

People of the city ran after the chariot. Some wept, "We do not want an Ayodhya without you." Rama gently turned them back, urging that no one should abandon his own duty or his home on his account.

Though he lost the kingdom and all comforts, Rama's fame did not diminish. The conduct he showed earned him the title Maryada Purushottama, the ideal of right bearing. The world remembers him today not as a king but as one who guarded his dharma above his life, and his life stands as proof that conduct is what gives a person greatness.
