Explanation

Uravor are those of inner strength, and Valluvar subtly shows that it is strength of mind, more than strength of body, that guards conduct. Opportunities to lapse come to everyone: when desire tempts, when fear presses, when circumstance shows an easy way, when nobody is watching. The person who does not slacken at such times is the uravon. The reason, Valluvar says, is that he knows beforehand the harm that follows a lapse.

Knowledge works here as a protective wall. The suffering that follows a lapse is not mere punishment; it takes the form of loss of name, mental disturbance, cracks in relationships and loss of respect for oneself. A mind that has pondered these things in advance does not rush. Commentators take edham as suffering and padupaakku as what is to come about, so the ability being praised is the ability to foresee consequence.

The benefit is plain in modern life. Someone who knows the legal trouble and loss of trust that follow dishonesty in business will not lean toward quick profit. A student who knows what cheating costs will put that temptation aside. Those who have seen the last step of an evil will hesitate to place a foot on the first. This foresight is the mark of a firm mind, and resolve joined with understanding is the best guard of conduct. It is not fear of punishment so much as a clear-eyed picture of what we would become.

A story

Manu Needhi Cholan

This is the story of Manu Needhi Cholan as told in Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam. The Chola king who ruled at Tiruvarur was famed for never swerving from justice. At his palace gate he had hung a bell of inquiry. Anyone seeking justice could ring it, and the king would come at once to listen.

He had a son named Veedhividangan. One day the prince was riding in his chariot through the street when a calf, leaping in play, got caught under the wheel and died. It was an accident born of carelessness, and the prince had no evil intent. But the mother cow came weeping to the palace gate and rang the bell.

Hearing the bell, the king came out and saw the cow's grief. When he learnt what had happened, his heart trembled. The ministers said, "Lord, this was an accident. You may make amends by giving much in charity and spare your son." But the king asked firmly, "How great is a mother's sorrow at the loss of her calf! Is there a different justice for a prince? If I excuse him because he is my son, tomorrow nobody will trust any justice."

He commanded that his own son be laid beneath the wheel of the chariot. He conquered his love and grief for the sake of justice. The ministers did not know what to do. When one finally came forward to carry out the order, the Purana says the Lord showed his grace, and both the prince and the calf came back to life.

The king stands as a fine example of the resolute who know the cost of a lapse yet do not waver. He knew what injustice would do to a land, so he bore his own sorrow and guarded his conduct.
