Water drawn for the paddy flows down the channel and reaches the grass too; so if there is one good person in the world, the rain falls for everyone for that person's sake.

Explanation

A farmer draws water for his paddy field, and as it runs along the channel it seeps into the grass on the bunds as well. No one drew water for the grass, yet the grass is nourished.

In the same way, says Avvaiyar, if there is even one good person in the world, the rain that falls for their sake falls for everyone. A person's goodness becomes a blessing not only for themselves but for all around them. Old Tamil belief links rain with righteousness; the literature says that when a king strays from dharma, the rains fail.

The verse gives us both responsibility and hope. When one person in a family, an office or a village stays honest, the benefit flows to many. It is the answer to the question, 'What use is it if I alone am good?'

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Bala Kanda)

Rishyasringa and the Rain in Anga

From the Valmiki Ramayana. King Romapada ruled the land of Anga. Once the rains failed there, and the people suffered in famine. The king sought the counsel of learned Brahmins.

'Rishyasringa, son of the sage Vibhandaka, has grown up in the forest knowing no one but his father. He is a pure ascetic who knows nothing of the world. If he comes to this land, the rain will fall,' they said. The king arranged to bring him with honour.

The moment Rishyasringa set foot in Anga, the sky darkened and heavy rain poured down. The parched fields filled, the rivers ran and the people rejoiced. The king gave him his daughter Shanta in marriage. Later this same Rishyasringa performed the sacrifice for sons for King Dasharatha, from which Rama and his brothers were born.

The rain that fell for one ascetic's purity gave life to a whole kingdom, as water drawn for the paddy reaches the grass as well.

To reflect on

Where might your honesty be quietly benefiting people around you without their knowing?
