Mahabharata, Adi ParvaSunda, Upasunda and Tilottama
A story Narada tells the Pandavas in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. The demon brothers Sunda and Upasunda were inseparable. Through fierce penance they won a boon from Brahma: no one could destroy them except each other. As long as they stayed united, they believed, they could not fall.
With the boon, they conquered the three worlds and tormented the sages. Their power, wealth and cunning were at their height. At the gods' plea, Brahma had Vishwakarma create a woman of supreme beauty, Tilottama.
When Tilottama appeared before them, both brothers were infatuated at the same moment. 'She is mine,' said one. 'No, mine,' said the other. The inseparable brothers took up their maces, fought, and killed each other.
Narada told this story so that the Pandavas would never be divided over Draupadi. When the hour of ruin came, even the minds of those who had conquered the three worlds fell into infatuation.
