Explanation

Keeping clear of the fickle and deceitful is sweet. The mind takes the colour of its company, so we must take care whom we keep close. The second is cherishing the words of the wise, which hold the experience of generations.

The last lines widen the view: to live worthily, in a way fitting for all living beings of this flowering world, is sweet. Not for humans alone, but for every creature. This vision, which takes in bird, beast and tree, is a foundation of the Hindu way of life: 'sarva-bhuta hite ratah', those who delight in the welfare of all beings.

Today it means caring for the environment, kindness to animals, and a life that leaves room for others to live.

From the Mahabharata (Shanti Parva)

Jajali and Tuladhara

From the Mahabharata. The sage Jajali stood motionless on the seashore in fierce austerity. Two birds built a nest in his matted hair and laid their eggs there. He stood without moving until the chicks hatched, grew and flew away. Then he grew proud: "Who has gained merit like mine?"

A voice from the sky answered: "Even Tuladhara, the merchant who lives in Kashi, does not speak so of himself." Astonished, Jajali went to Kashi and found Tuladhara sitting in his shop with his scales.

Tuladhara welcomed him humbly. "I harm no one," he said. "My scales weigh equally for all. I neither flatter nor blame anyone. My dharma is friendship toward every living being. No creature fears me, and I fear none."

Jajali's mind grew clear. He understood that the life of this simple merchant, lived in harmony with all beings, stood higher than the glory of his own austerities, and his pride fell away.

Cherishing the words of the wise and living worthily toward all beings is sweet; and to learn it, even a great sage had to visit a merchant's shop.
