Explanation

The first song is one great list: the five elements, sun and moon, the fourteen worlds, man and woman, light and darkness, gold and wealth, the nine planets. After each one comes the word 'You'. The repeated 'You' makes the point that there is no place in the world where the Lord is not.

The words 'You are the mother and father who bore me' and 'You are the guru who came to teach' turn this vast Lord into a close relation. That relationship is why the devotee speaks so freely through the whole book. If You are everything, to whom else could I take my sorrow?

The phrase 'You are the foot and the crown of the Vedas' recalls the column of fire at Annamalai, whose base and top Brahma and Vishnu searched for and could not find.

Shiva Purana, the story of Lingodbhava

Brahma and Vishnu Search for the Ends of the Flame

From the Shiva Purana. Once Brahma and Vishnu argued over which of them was the greater. Just then a column of fire without limit appeared before them. They agreed that whoever first found its base or its top would be the greater.

Vishnu took the form of a boar and dug down into the earth; Brahma became a swan and flew upward. Ages passed and neither found an end. Vishnu came back humbly and admitted, 'I could not find it.' Brahma, however, took a thazhampoo flower that was falling from above as his witness and lied, 'I have seen the top.'

Then Shiva appeared from the middle of the column of fire. He praised Vishnu for his honesty. He told Brahma that because of his lie he would have no temple worship, and that the thazhampoo flower would not be used in worship. That column of fire is Thiruvannamalai, and the Karthigai Deepam is lit in its memory. When the song says 'You are the foot and the crown', it means this limitless Lord whom no search can reach.

To reflect on

Can you see the divine today in three ordinary things: water, light, and one person close to you?
