Meaning

Taking a body like a wave on the ocean of this world, trusting a life that is only a dream, bound in the whirlwind of the three desires, searching day and night for food for this pot of a body, I have done nothing but eat and sleep. Is it fitting for You to leave me tangled in bonds without even asking 'Why?'

Explanation

The third song is a chain of images: the world is an ocean, the body a wave, life a dream, desire a whirlwind, the belly a pot. As a wave rises and falls, the body appears and vanishes; as what we saw in a dream is gone when we wake, life too passes.

The line 'I have seen nothing but eating and sleeping, and gained nothing' is sharp. If a whole day of labour ends only in eating and sleeping, what is the use of a human birth? The bonds of attachment wind round us like a creeper, and we are caught in 'mother, child, you, me'.

Yet the song does not end in self-pity. It asks the Lord with a child's freedom: 'Is it fitting for You not even to ask me why?' Seeing the trap clearly is the first step out of it.

The life of Pattinathar (Tamil Shaiva tradition)

The Needle Without an Eye

From Tamil Shaiva tradition. In Kaveripoompattinam lived a great merchant named Thiruvenkadar. He had ships full of trade, a mansion and great wealth. By the Lord's grace he was given a son, Maruthavanan, to end his sorrow at being childless.

When the son grew up he sailed across the sea to trade. He came back with a ship full of dried cow-dung cakes and bran. His father was furious, but hidden inside the cakes was gold. The son gave his mother a small box and then disappeared. Inside was a needle with a broken eye and a palm-leaf note: 'Not even a needle without an eye will go with you on the last road.'

Those words split Thiruvenkadar's heart open. That very day he gave up all his wealth and became a renunciant, known as Pattinathar. His songs, like this one, point to the emptiness of a life spent only eating and sleeping. Tradition says that Maruthavanan was the Lord of Thiruvidaimarudur Himself.

To reflect on

Apart from eating, sleeping and working, what did you do today that you would want to carry with you?
