Periya Puranam, the life of Thirunavukkarasar (Appar)Appar in the Lime Kiln
From the Periya Puranam. Thirunavukkarasar, known as Appar, had followed another faith in his youth. Through the prayers of his elder sister Thilakavathiyar he received Shiva's grace and returned to the Shaiva path. The angry Pallava king ordered him to be shut for seven days inside a burning lime kiln.
Appar was not afraid. He did not reach for any spell or trick. He thought of the Lord's feet and sang: 'Like a flawless veena, like the evening moon, like the blowing south breeze, like early spring, like a pond humming with bees: such is the shade of the twin feet of my Lord and father.' The shade of the Lord's feet, he said, was cool as music, moonlight and breeze.
When the kiln was opened after seven days, Appar sat there in peace. Later, poisoned food, a raging elephant and being tied to a stone and thrown into the sea could not harm him either. What saved him was no magic power, but a mind that never left the Lord's feet. That is exactly what the fourth song asks for.
