Meaning

I have told You a thousand times that I come in pain; are Your ears dull? Is there a father who will not look after the simple child he fathered? Is there a heart that does not soften once someone clings to its feet? Are Ganesha and Murugan not Your two sons; are You childless? The Vedas and scriptures praise You. You who guard the fourteen worlds, answer me; from now on I will not let You go.

Explanation

The fifth song is a rain of questions. 'Are Your ears dull? Is there a father who ignores his child? A heart that abandons one who clings to its feet? Have You not two sons? Are You childless?' They sound like angry questions, but they are questions of faith. They come from the certainty that a good father never abandons his child.

There is gentle irony in the line 'The Vedas and scriptures all praise You; is this not a strange sight?' The whole world calls You an ocean of mercy, yet here I am weeping. Is that not odd?

The song ends with 'From now on I will not let You go.' It is the resolve of surrender, like a child who holds onto its mother's sari and will not let go.

Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva; Linga Purana

Upamanyu Who Cried for Milk

From the Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva. A boy named Upamanyu was born into a poor family of sages. One day he drank milk at a rich household, then came home and asked his mother for milk. They had no cow. His mother stirred flour into water and gave it to him as 'milk'. The boy tasted it and wept.

With tears in her eyes his mother said, 'My son, the only one who gives us everything is Shiva. Ask Him.' The boy believed her. He went into the forest, stood on one foot and chanted 'Namasivaya' in penance. The Lord came in the form of Indra to test him: 'Leave Shiva and worship me.' Upamanyu refused: 'I want no boon that does not come from Shiva.'

At once Shiva appeared with Uma. He took the boy as His own son and, the Purana says, gave him a whole ocean of milk. Upamanyu later became the great sage who initiated Krishna himself into Shiva worship. This is the answer to the fifth song's question: will a father abandon a crying child?

To reflect on

Is there someone who depends on you who needs your answer today, the way a child needs a parent?
