Explanation

This couplet speaks of the relation between tapas and fitness for it. 'Thavamudaiyaarkku' means those who have the capacity for tapas, that is, firmness of mind, patience and detachment. Tapas is fruitful only for such people. 'Ahdhilaar', those who lack that capacity, gain nothing by taking it up.

Two explanations are given here. Parimelazhagar and some others hold that tapas is accomplished in this birth by those who have practised it in a former birth. Others say that only the tapas of a person with firmness in the heart bears fruit and that tapas done for show is fruitless. The basic idea in both is the same: tapas is not an outer act but depends on inner fitness.

What happens if the unfit try it? They cannot bear its hardships and give up midway, or they stage it as a mere costume. Neither yields fruit. So the subtle advice of the couplet is that a person should examine himself and choose a way suited to his strength of mind and circumstances.

This is not meant to push away those who lack drive. Fitness can be developed through practice. Starting with small vows and small restraints and growing strength step by step is the right way, and even a modest discipline kept faithfully can prepare the ground.

A story

Vishwamitra's Penance

The story of Vishwamitra is told in the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana. Once a king named Kaushika, he marvelled at the power of the sage Vasishtha's tapas. When he tried to seize Vasishtha's cow Nandini with his army, he realised that royal might had lost to penance. 'Kshatriya strength is useless; the strength of tapas is the real strength,' he decided, and gave up his kingdom to do severe tapas.

When his tapas grew strong, Indra became afraid and sent the celestial dancer Menaka. Charmed by Menaka's beauty, Vishwamitra lived with her for many years, and a daughter, Shakuntala, was born. One day he realised that his tapas was spoiled, left Menaka and went again to tapas. After severe effort once more, he gained the title of rajarshi.

On another occasion his tapas was ruined by the temptation of Rambha and by the anger that followed; he cursed her. He saw his tapas scattered and was grieved. Realising that 'tapas cannot last unless the enemy called anger is conquered', he resolved to control anger and breath. The Purana says he kept a vow of silence for a thousand years.

Even then Indra, disguised as a brahmin who came to eat his meal, asked for all the cooked rice. Vishwamitra silently gave it and continued his tapas hungry. There was no trace of anger on his face. Seeing that patience, Brahma called him a brahmarishi.

In this story tapas did not come easily. He failed many times, slipped through anger, was tempted by desire. But he recognised his fault and learned. Only after he had grown in fitness did his tapas bear fruit. This explains 'thavamum thavamudaiyaarkku aagum'.

It encourages us as well: one who has slipped can grow in fitness by training again.
