Explanation

Here we find Valluvar's definition of tapas. 'Utranoi nondral' is to bear the suffering that has come upon one. 'Uyirkkurukan seyyaamai' is to cause affliction to no life. These two together are tapas, he says. 'Uru' means form, the mark by which tapas is recognised.

Both parts of the definition matter. One is a discipline within oneself; the other is one's relation with others. If a person torments himself while hurting others, that is not tapas. Equally, if someone claims to hurt no one but accepts no hardship, that is not complete tapas either. It becomes whole only when the two meet in balance.

Commentators explain 'utranoi' either as the suffering of a vow that one has taken up willingly or as the suffering that has come in the course of life by itself. In both the thought is that bearing it without complaint is tapas. It also follows that a person strong enough to bear pain will readily feel the pain of others.

Today we should not see tapas as only an outward costume. To stand patiently through illness, money trouble or failure, blaming no one and doing one's duty, is tapas as well. It happens inside our everyday lives, and each day offers some small share of it.

A story

Sita and the Rakshasis

This episode is from the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana. Sita, abducted by Ravana, was kept captive for ten months in the Ashoka grove in Lanka. Rakshasi women stood guard around her. They threatened her daily and tormented her with harsh words. 'Accept Ravana, or we shall eat you,' they said. Sita bore her pain quietly, holding fast to the hope that Rama would come.

In those days she grew thin, neither eating nor sleeping. Yet her heart did not fail. Her firmness when she placed a blade of grass between herself and Ravana and spoke shows her purity and courage. She cursed no one; she carried her sorrow within herself. Only one rakshasi, Trijata, was kind to her and comforted her.

After Ravana fell, Hanuman came to the Ashoka grove to tell Sita of the victory. Seeing the rakshasis there, he was angry. 'These women tormented you. Let me punish them here,' he said. Sita stopped him.

The Ramayana records her words: 'They were servants who acted at their king's command. This suffering came to me as the fruit of my own earlier deeds. Do not be angry with them. Who in the world has not done wrong? The good do not keep other people's faults in mind.' She forgave the rakshasis.

The beauty of this act is that one who had suffered for months did not even in victory wish for revenge. Her tapas was complete not only in bearing pain but in not causing pain to others afterwards.

It is hard to find a better example of tapas that joins bearing the suffering that has come with not harming living things. That is why Sita is honoured in our tradition as the symbol of patience and compassion.
