Explanation

This couplet is framed as a question. 'Thurandhaarkku' means for those who have renounced after tapas. 'Thuppuravu' means the needs of life such as food, clothing and shelter. 'Matraiyavargal' are the others who remain in worldly life. Valluvar asks whether these householders have forgotten tapas only in order to supply the renunciates' needs.

Commentators explain the verse in different tones. Some take it as praise: serving the renunciates is itself equal to tapas, so the others practise tapas in their own station. Others take it as a regret pointing out that householders do not practise tapas. The word 'kol' carries doubt and a question, so Valluvar does not state his thought directly but makes the reader think.

Two truths meet here. One, renunciates live on society's support. Two, the number of those who practise tapas in society is small. Valluvar brings out the relation between the two by means of a question. There is also a concern lest society neglect its spiritual growth and busy itself only with bodily needs.

In our present setting we may look at it from another angle: beyond occupation and income, does each of us set aside some time for inner growth? Tapas is not the sole right of renunciates; it is a moral training that every person can undertake to some extent.

A story

Durvasa and Draupadi

This story is from the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. During the Pandavas' forest years, the Sun God gave them an akshaya patra, a bowl of plenty. After Draupadi had cooked in it, served everyone and eaten herself, it would give no more food for that day. Until then it would give food to however many came. Feeding all visitors was their householder's duty.

One day Draupadi had fed everyone, eaten herself, and washed and put away the bowl. The day's food was finished. Then the sage Durvasa, famed for his short temper, arrived with ten thousand disciples. The Purana says he came at Duryodhana's prompting. 'We shall bathe in the river and return; let the meal be ready,' he said, and went.

Draupadi trembled in fear. If Durvasa's anger fell on her, the Pandavas would be cursed. She called Krishna to mind with all her heart. Krishna appeared at once. 'I am hungry; give me something to eat,' he said. Draupadi said in tears, 'The bowl is finished for today.' When Krishna looked at the akshaya patra, a small leaf of spinach stuck to its rim. He took it, ate it, and said, 'May the whole world be satisfied by this.'

At that moment Durvasa and his disciples on the river bank felt as though their stomachs were full. 'We have already eaten much; it is not proper to go back and ask for food,' they said, and the Purana tells that they returned without going to the Pandavas' place at all.

This story shows the relationship in which householders and ascetics support each other. Even in hard times, the Pandavas made feeding visitors their tapas, and that way protected them.

To the couplet's question, 'is it for the sake of supplying the renunciates that others have forgotten tapas?', this tale answers that the householder's work of feeding is itself a kind of tapas.
