Explanation

This couplet speaks of the highest power of tapas. 'Kootram' means Yama, the god of death, the one who cuts a life apart. 'Kudhithal' is to leap over or overcome. 'Aatral thalaippattavarkku' means for those who have reached power through tapas. For such persons, Valluvar says, even leaping beyond Death becomes possible.

Commentators explain this in different ways. Some take it that by the strength of tapas one can postpone one's death or remove the fear of death altogether; the Puranic tales offer examples. Others say that to overcome death means to be freed from the cycle of birth and attain liberation. Still others take it as living on by good fame even after the body perishes. Whatever the reading, the thought is that the strength of tapas helps a person cross even humanity's greatest fear.

Death frightens everyone. The strength that crosses it is fearlessness. True tapas gives us the courage to face death. A mind that remains unshaken even when death draws near has in a sense conquered death.

In our own lives we face small fears every day: failure, loss, parting. Learning to meet these with a steady heart is the first step in the great tapas. As that strength grows, the final fear lessens too.

A story

Markandeya and Yama

This is the story of Markandeya, honoured in the Shiva Purana and in Tamil tradition. The sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati performed tapas to Shiva for a child. Shiva asked them, 'Do you want a child of little wisdom who lives a hundred years, or a child of excellent wisdom who lives only sixteen?' They chose the sixteen-year-old of great knowledge. That child was Markandeya.

From childhood Markandeya grew in devotion to Shiva. He learned from his parents that his life would end at sixteen. That fear did not weaken him. He spent his life wholly in worshipping Shiva. When the last day of his sixteenth year came, he was in tapas, embracing a Shiva lingam.

Yama, the god of death, sent his messengers. They could not endure the light of Markandeya's tapas and returned. Yama came himself and cast his noose. The noose fell around Markandeya and also over the lingam. At that moment Shiva emerged from the lingam in fury and kicked Yama, who fell. Shiva came to be called Kalasamhara Murti, the destroyer of Death.

With death stopped in the world, the gods and Mother Earth grieved. Shiva revived Yama and granted Markandeya a boon to remain sixteen for ever. Tradition says this happened at Tirukkadaiyur in Tamil Nadu, where people still celebrate events such as the sixtieth birthday ceremony.

Markandeya faced Yama without fear. His tapas made him so firm that he could not be separated from the lingam. This episode beautifully illustrates the couplet that to those who have reached the power of tapas, even leaping beyond Death is attainable.

The way this story shows us to face death calmly and with confidence is to keep God in mind to the last day and to practise tapas in peace.
