Explanation

This couplet compares those who practise tapas with those who do not. 'Thangarumam' means one's own duty or the act for one's true good. Valluvar says that those who do tapas are the ones doing their real duty. The 'matralaar', those who do not, 'aasaiyulpattu avanjeyvaar': 'avam' means waste or ruin, so caught in desire they bring harm upon themselves.

Commentators differ slightly in how they give the sense of 'thangarumam'. Some take it as meaning that those who do tapas achieve their own good result. Others take it as saying that doing tapas is the basic duty a human being must perform. In both, the danger of desire and the need for tapas come out.

Those who believe that desire gives them everything run after it and in the end lose their peace of mind. Once desire is fulfilled it creates another; endless seeking leaves a person tired. Valluvar calls such a life 'avanjeydhal', the wasting of one's own life.

Tapas is a training that gives desire its order. There must be effort to attain what one wishes, but one must not become desire's slave. In this age of consumption the couplet is much needed. Before each purchase, to ask 'Do I truly need this?' is itself a small tapas.

A story

Yayati's Desire

In the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata we find the story of King Yayati, son of Nahusha, a king of the lunar line. He married Devayani, daughter of the asura preceptor Shukracharya. Sharmishtha, daughter of the asura king, also became his companion. When Devayani learned of it, she was angry and complained to her father. In anger Shukracharya cursed Yayati: 'You will become old.'

Aged in the midst of youth, Yayati was still not satisfied with pleasure. When he begged Shukracharya, the sage said, 'If one of your sons gives you his youth, you may transfer your old age to him.' Yayati asked his sons. The elder ones refused. Only the youngest, Puru, agreed to give his youth for his father's happiness.

Yayati enjoyed pleasures for many thousands of years. But however much he enjoyed, his desire was not quenched. The Mahabharata records the truth he finally realised, in his own words: 'As fire burns brighter when ghee is poured on it, desire is not quieted by pleasure but grows more. Even if all things in the world went to one man, his mind would ask for more. Giving up desire is happiness.'

Realising this, Yayati returned Puru's youth to him and took back his old age. He crowned Puru and himself went to the forest for tapas. By that tapas, the Purana says, he afterwards attained a high world.

In the days when he was drowned in desire, Yayati lost himself and also shattered his family bonds. Only after giving up desire and entering tapas did his mind find peace. This stands as the full explanation of 'those who do tapas do their own duty; the others, caught in desire, ruin themselves'.

It is a simple warning for us too: instead of seeking water for desire's endless thirst, the way is to train desire.
