Explanation

'Arumai udaiththu' means "this is hard." It is human nature to see a task as difficult. But the one who stays inside that thought has lost before beginning. 'Asaavaamai' is not drooping, an unwearied firmness of mind, and Valluvar places it as the first requirement.

There is a fine idea here. The hardness of a task lies not only in the task but also in our mind. When a mountain-like task is broken into small portions and done each day, it becomes easy. One who has defeated the thought of difficulty has already won half of the work.

The line 'perumai muyarchi tharum' gives the assurance that greatness does not come by birth but by effort. Some commentators take 'perumai' as the splendour of wealth, others as the esteem of the wise. In both, the sense is the same: the one who worked rises.

Even today, big goals in learning, trade and art look hard at first. Time raises those who, instead of retreating at the look of it, put forward the next step. So the first lesson of this chapter is this: difficulty is no reason to withdraw; it is an invitation to try.

Thus the verse is the first vow we should make to ourselves whenever a hard task stands before us.

A story

Bhagiratha's Effort for the Ganga

The Bala Kanda of the Ramayana tells this story. According to the Purana, the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara of the Ikshvaku line were reduced to ashes by the anger of sage Kapila. For them to reach liberation, the heavenly Ganga had to descend to earth and wet their ashes. It seemed a task too hard for human power.

Sagara's grandson Amshuman tried to find a way to call Ganga and performed austerities, but could not succeed in his life. His son Dilipa also performed austerities; he too could not. Both could have drooped and withdrawn, saying it was hard. But they did not give up the effort; they handed the seed of that effort to the next generation.

Dilipa's son Bhagiratha entrusted the kingdom to his ministers and went to the Himalaya. He performed severe austerities for many years. At last Brahma appeared and said, 'Ganga will descend; but the earth cannot bear her force; only Lord Shiva can.' Bhagiratha again performed austerities towards Shiva. The Lord took pity and received Ganga in his matted locks.

Then Ganga followed Bhagiratha, flowing on earth. The hermitage of sage Jahnu stood in her path; the Purana says the sage drank her and released her at Bhagiratha's plea. At last Ganga reached the netherworld and wet the ashes of Sagara's sons, who attained liberation.

To this day the Ganga is also called Bhagirathi, a name given for one man's resolve. Three generations that did not droop did the rare deed. Had they been dismayed by difficulty, the Ganga would not have come to the earth. That is why the phrase 'Bhagiratha prayatna' is used for supreme effort.
