Explanation

In the closing verse of the chapter, Valluvar places his highest view of trouble. Beyond bearing trouble and smiling before it, he comes here to the state of taking trouble itself as pleasure. 'Innaamai' is hardship; to accept it as 'inbam' is the attitude that welcomes, rather than hates, the difficulty of toil and the severity of austerity.

How is this possible? If a student regards hard practice as the strength growing within him, it is not a burden but joy. If a warrior takes the pain of combat training as a sign of strength, it is not suffering. Likewise, when we begin to see life's hardships as chances to grow us, trouble turns into pleasure.

'Onnaar vizhaiyum sirappu' is the lovely close of the verse. Even enemies respect a man with such an attitude, because they see that no trouble will bring him down. Some commentators read 'onnaar vizhaiyum' as even enemies would wish to gain that excellence. Others say even enemies will bow to him.

This is not advice to go seeking hardship. It tells the way of facing unavoidable hardship. Hardship accepted with willingness turns into strength; hardship accepted with hatred turns into a burden. The choice is in our hand.

This is the peak of the chapter: it rises from beginning to smile, to thinking, to loosening attachment, and at last to taking even trouble as pleasure. In that rise each of us can climb at least one step.

A story

Arjuna's Penance on Indrakila Hill

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells of Arjuna's penance. While the Pandavas were in exile, Vyasa taught Arjuna the way to obtain the Pashupata weapon. Arjuna went to Indrakila hill in the Himalaya. First Indra came in the form of a sage and tested him. 'Why such severe austerity? Seek pleasures,' he said, trying to move Arjuna's mind. Arjuna stood firm in his aim. Then Indra revealed himself and guided him to perform penance towards Lord Shiva.

Arjuna began harsh penance. In the first month he ate fruit once in three days; in the second month once in six days; in the third once in fifteen days; later, the Purana says, he stood on one leg with raised arms taking only air as food. The heat of his austerity disturbed even the sages. They appealed to Shiva.

Shiva came in the form of a hunter named Kirata, with Uma as a huntress beside him. Then an asura named Muka in the form of a boar came to attack Arjuna. Arjuna and Kirata shot at the same moment and killed it. A dispute began over whose arrow had killed the boar. It turned into a fight. Arjuna's arrows did not harm Kirata. His bow broke; his sword broke. At last in wrestling Kirata threw him down.

Arjuna made a Shiva linga of earth and offered flowers. Seeing those flowers on the head of Kirata, he understood the truth. When he bowed, Shiva appeared in his true form and praised his valour and austerity. He gave him the Pashupata weapon.

Arjuna accepted without hatred the hardships of severe penance, battle and defeat. So he was praised by God himself. Later in heaven Indra too honoured him. For 'innaamai inbam enakkolin', Arjuna's penance is the witness of accepting hardship with delight.
