Explanation

In the previous verse Valluvar called those who read signs an ornament of the world; here he compares them to a god. Why this elevation? The human heart is a hidden place. What is in it is known to others only if the person himself says so; to know what is unspoken seems to go beyond human power. So it is natural to see in such a person a share of divinity. The word for 'without doubt' shows that this is not guessing but sensing with certainty.

In our religious tradition God is honoured as the indweller who knows everything from within. Devotees believe that he knows his devotee's need before the mouth opens. When we see that same quality in a human being, there is no wonder in regarding him as equal to a deity. This is not a call to worship him; it is a call to value his ability highly.

What is the practical use in life? When we find such persons, we should hold them in respect in our lives. When they become our teachers, doctors or friends, they are great wealth to us. Understanding their sensitivity, we should deal with them honestly and openly. To act in the knowledge that nothing can be hidden from them is the respect we give them. To compare a human being with a god is not only praise; it also reminds him of responsibility. One who can sense the heart should use that power only for good and never to exploit another's weakness. Only when used for good does that power become divine.

A story

The Lord Who Knew Kannappar's Heart

The life of Kannappa Nayanar is praised in the Periya Puranam. On the hill of Kalahasti, Lord Shiva dwelt in the form of a linga. There a brahmin priest named Sivagochariyar worshipped daily, purely and according to the Agamas. One day a hunter-chief named Thinnan came hunting, and the moment he saw that linga, boundless love welled up in his heart. He was of the hunter clan, knew no Veda and none of the rules of the Agamas.

He offered the sweetest meat he had tasted, poured water from his mouth over the linga and offered flowers from his own hair, sweeping away the previous day's flowers with his sandal. All these ran against the rules of Agamic worship. When Sivagochariyar came the next day and saw it, he was shocked. Grieving at such pollution, he cleansed the place and worshipped again.

The priest complained to the Lord in sorrow, and the Lord appeared in his dream, the Periya Puranam tells, and said, 'What you see are acts; what I see is his love. Hide tomorrow and watch how dear he is to me.'

Next day Sivagochariyar hid. The Lord caused blood to flow from his eye. Seeing it, Thinnan was in agony. No herbs were of use. With his arrow he dug out one of his own eyes and placed it on the eye of the linga. The bleeding stopped. But the other eye bled too. He set out to dig out his second eye as well, and to find the spot afterwards he placed his foot on the linga's eye. Then the Lord stopped him, 'Stay, Kannappa,' as the Periya Puranam sings.

Men saw the act; the Lord saw the love in the heart. The story shows that this ability to read the heart belongs to God, and that anyone who has such inward perception may be regarded as godlike.
