Explanation

This is a sharply framed verse in the form of a question. Among the organs of the body the eye has a special worth. It helps us see the world, shows us the way and makes us feel beauty. But what use are eyes to one who, looking at another's face, does not understand his mind? He is as one who sees without seeing. Valluvar joins the glory given to the eye to its real duty: its use is not mere sight but inward perception.

A subtle question lies in it: does the organ called the eye see, or does the mind? We see through the eye, but understanding is of the mind. If the mind is not engaged and only the eye looks, the seeing is useless. That is why we say of a person who stands inattentive to his duty, 'he has eyes but is blind'. Valluvar's question gives this common saying a deep foundation.

How much we look at in life today! So many faces and pictures on screens. But how much do we sense of the sorrow or joy on the face of the one near us? If parents fail to see the shadow of worry on a child's face, if an employer fails to notice the weariness of a servant, they have eyes but no sight. This verse is a warning to us: let us learn not just to look but to understand.

A story

The Teacher Who Noticed

This is an imagined tale. Kamala taught the fifth standard in a school near Tiruchi. Every day she taught forty children. But the face of every child was as familiar to her as the textbook. She noticed daily whose face was bright and whose had drooped.

One day an eight-year-old girl, Meenakshi, came to class. Normally she sat in the front row, raising her hand and answering every question, but today she sat on the back bench with her head bowed. There was a dimness in her eyes. During the lesson she seemed to be writing but nothing appeared in her notebook.

Teacher Kamala did not ask her anything. At recess she went to her and asked, 'Meenu, will you eat with me today?' When she opened her lunch box tears welled in Meenakshi's eyes. 'Teacher, my grandmother died last night. Everyone at home was crying. I came to school. I did not know how to tell anyone.'

The teacher held her close. 'Your face told me before you did, my dear. You need not study today. Sit near me and tell me what you remember about your grandmother.' Meenakshi slowly recalled the stories her grandmother told and the sweets she made. As she spoke, her heart quietened.

That evening the teacher spoke to her mother and kindly suggested that she need not come to school for a few days. The other teachers also had eyes, as Kamala had. But that 'sight' was hers alone. That is the true use of the eye.
