Explanation

Having praised those who read signs as an ornament of the world and as godlike, Valluvar here gives a practical counsel: take them as your companions at any price. For 'whatever one may give' commentators give two readings: giving some limb of one's own body, or giving any part of one's wealth. Either way, the idea is that one should obtain them at any cost. Such a companion is priceless wealth.

Why such value? A king or leader cannot say everything aloud; sometimes the setting forbids speech, sometimes the matter is too subtle. At such times, an adviser who can understand by hint and act prevents many troubles. The time and energy needed to explain are saved. That is why such a person is a great investment.

When we seek a good assistant in an institution today, this ability to read hints is an important measure alongside skill and honesty. In choosing a life partner too, the best companion is one who senses what is unsaid. To say we should obtain such help at a price is to show its worth, not to treat affection as something to be bought. Here the 'price' need not be money; it may be our comfort, our ego or our time. Giving such an adviser due worth and respect, and being ready to listen to him, is also the price of having him.

A story

Arjuna Chooses Krishna

From the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata. When the war of Kurukshetra became certain, both sides began to seek allies. Arjuna for the Pandavas and Duryodhana for the Kauravas decided to go to Dwaraka and ask Krishna for help. They reached Dwaraka at about the same time.

Krishna was then asleep. Duryodhana entered first and sat on a high seat at the head of the bed. Arjuna, who came a little later, stood humbly at Krishna's feet. When Krishna woke, his eyes fell first on Arjuna.

He asked both why they had come. When each said he wanted help in the war, Krishna offered a choice: 'On one side my armies; on the other, myself alone, without weapons in the battle. Since I saw Arjuna first, he should have the first choice; but he is also the younger, and the younger gets to choose first in any case.'

Arjuna did not hesitate. 'You alone are enough, Krishna. It is enough for me that you are with me.' Duryodhana was glad; he thought it fortunate that the great Narayani army had come to him. He thought Arjuna foolish for choosing an unarmed man.

But Arjuna knew that not the strength of armies but the wisdom of reading minds is the key to victory. He chose Krishna's counsel as wealth to be obtained at any price. On the battlefield Krishna stood as his charioteer and at each moment, sensing his mind's hint and the course of the fight, guided him. This is the true form of 'take them whatever the cost': leaving a great army to choose one companion.
