Explanation

A crystal has no colour of its own; place a red flower near it and it looks red, a blue flower and it looks blue. Valluvar takes this simple experience as an image for the face. Whatever feeling rises in the heart, joy, fear, anger or sorrow, is at once reflected on the face. If the heart is a flower, the face is the crystal that catches its light.

There is subtlety in 'what is nearby'. A crystal shows only what is near it, not what is far. Likewise the face shows the feeling that stands foremost in the heart at present, not old memories or hidden thoughts. The word for 'surged up' denotes a state of feeling brimming over. Mild feeling the face may hide; but when it swells it appears on the face beyond control.

Two lessons follow. One, if we observe another's face well, we can understand the state of his mind. Two, knowing that our own face will betray our feelings, we should first quieten the mind on important occasions. A calm mind gives a calm face. Trying to hide only the face without settling the heart will not last long. There is a further subtlety. A crystal shows colour clearly only if it is clean; a dust-covered crystal does not show anything correctly. Likewise, the feeling in a pure-minded person shows clearly on his face, while the face of a scheming mind is unclear.

A story

The Face of Bharata

From the Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramayana. Rama was living at Chitrakuta with Sita and Lakshmana. One day a great dust rose in the distance, and a vast force of elephants, horses and chariots came toward them. Lakshmana climbed a tall tree to look. On the banners he saw the kovidara tree emblem of Ayodhya. Anger flared in his heart.

'Brother, Bharata has come to kill us in order to secure his kingdom. I shall fight him,' said Lakshmana in wrath. His face reddened, his brows knitted, his hand gripped the bow. His face showed the anger in his heart like a crystal.

Rama looked at him calmly. He understood both Lakshmana's anger and Bharata's heart. 'Lakshmana, Bharata is full of love. He will not come to kill us. He loves us more than the kingdom. He comes to take us back,' he said. Lakshmana was not calmed.

Bharata left his army at a distance and came on foot, unshod, in great humility. When he saw Rama his face was drenched with tears. All saw the sorrow and love on his face. He fell at his brother's feet and wept. Seeing those tears, Lakshmana too was ashamed.

Here two faces revealed two hearts. Lakshmana's anger was born of suspicion; Bharata's tears were born of pure love. Rama read both through the face and sensed the truth at once. He had the wisdom to know the flower near the crystal from the colours it shows.
