Penance · Thavam

This chapter teaches that the true form of penance is to bear suffering patiently and to cause pain to no living being. Valluvar concludes that tapas builds strength, and that the world honours the person who has conquered desire.

Introduction

After the chapters on compassion and on abstaining from flesh comes the chapter on penance. If compassion is the first step of Ascetic Virtue, penance, tapas, is the next. One who has grown in compassion takes up the discipline called tapas to grow also in strength and firmness of mind. Valluvar does not present tapas here as merely going into the forest and tormenting the body. He gives his definition in the very first couplet: tapas takes the form of bearing the pain that comes to one and of causing pain to no living being. Penance is thus a moral life in which self-training and protecting others come together.

The word tapas has several meanings in our tradition: vow, fast, meditation, restraint of the senses, hard effort. In Tamil the word 'norral' denotes tapas, with the root sense of bearing suffering. The whole chapter carries that basic feeling: the strength to bear hardship is the root of power. Our Puranas sing of tapas in many ways: Parvati who performed penance to reach Shiva, Dhruva who left the kingdom for the forest, Bhagiratha who brought down the Ganga.

The ten couplets move in order. The first gives the definition of tapas. The second and third speak of who is fit to practise it and who bears the duty of sustaining those who do. The fourth and fifth speak of the power and fulfilment of wishes that tapas brings. The sixth says those who do tapas do their own duty while the rest fall into the net of desire and ruin themselves. The seventh gives the beautiful figure of gold shining brighter the more it is burned, as suffering makes tapas shine. The eighth says the world worships one who has conquered desire. The ninth says those strong in tapas may even conquer death. The tenth links the multitude of the poor in the world with the fewness of those who do tapas.

How does this apply to life today? We need not go to a forest. But the student who sits up all night for an examination, the mother who toils in the sun for her family, the artist who trains for many years in an art, all hold the life of tapas. Every effort that bears hardship for a goal and moves ahead without harming anyone is a small form of this teaching.

Chapter story

Parvati's Penance

This is the story of Parvati's penance, honoured in the Shiva Puranas and in Tamil tradition. Sati, daughter of Daksha, entered the fire, unable to bear the insult at her father's sacrifice. She was later born as Parvati, daughter of Himavan. From her childhood she wished to gain Shiva himself as her husband. Shiva was in deep meditation on Kailasa, having set aside all worldly pleasures.

Guided by Narada, Parvati resolved to do penance to win Shiva. She gave up palace comforts and ornaments. Tradition says her mother Mena tried to stop her with the words 'U-ma', 'do not, my child', and so she received the name Uma. But Parvati did not give up her resolve. She stood in the summer sun amid five fires; she stood in water in rain and cold; she gave up even leaves and in time lived on air alone.

By the Tamil tradition she worshipped at Kanchipuram as Kamakshi, making a lingam of sand beneath a mango tree. To test her, Shiva sent a flood in the river Kampa. Fearing that the flood would sweep the lingam away, Parvati held it tight to her breast. Seeing her love and firmness, Shiva appeared before her. At the Ekambaranatha temple they say that the mark of that embrace can still be seen on the lingam.

The Purana also says that to test Parvati's resolve Shiva came before her in the form of a young celibate student. In that guise he spoke ill of Shiva: 'He lives in the cremation ground, wears a tiger skin, smears himself with ash and takes snakes for ornaments. Why waste your youth on such a one?' Hearing these words, Parvati was angry. 'You do not know the greatness of my Lord. Even to listen to one who reviles him is a sin,' she said, and began to leave. At that moment Shiva appeared in his true form.

Parvati's penance was not for herself alone. When Shiva's meditation had withdrawn from the world, the gods needed a son, the future Murugan, to defeat the demon Tarakasura, and that could come only from the union of Parvati and Shiva. Her tapas was therefore tied to the good of the world.

Through all the hardships of her penance Parvati never forgot her goal. Her tapas was the image of a mind that did not fear hunger or heat. It is said that she harmed no animal or bird around her; wild deer came to stand near her without fear, a sign of her compassion.

The beauty of the tale is that while bearing fierce heat, cold and hunger she harmed no creature. It shows the couplet's definition: bearing the suffering that comes and not causing injury to life.

The same lesson comes to us: those who patiently bear hardships for a great purpose receive in the end what is theirs, and their success benefits others too.

The Skanda Purana adds that after Shiva and Parvati were united, Murugan was born and destroyed Tarakasura and Surapadma, freeing the gods. So the firm penance of a young woman became an event that brought release not only to herself but to the world. That is why women still take up vows such as the Gowri nonbu with a full heart.
