நாதாந்த நாடகத்தை நன்றாய் அருள்செய்தீர்ஓதீர் எழுத்து அஞ்சும் உள்ளபடி – தீது அறவேஅஞ்சு எழுத்து ஈது ஆகில் அழியும் எழுத்து ஆய்விடுமோதஞ்ச அருள் குருவே சாற்று.

பொருள்
(சீடன்:) நாதாந்தத்தில் நடக்கும் நாடகத்தை நன்றாக அருளினீர். இனி ஐந்தெழுத்தையும் உள்ளபடி ஓதியருளும். ஐந்தெழுத்து இதுவே என்றால், அது அழியும் எழுத்துகளில் ஒன்றாகிவிடுமோ? அடைக்கலம் தரும் அருள் குருவே, குற்றம் நீங்கச் சொல்லியருள்.
Meaning
(Disciple:) You have graciously told me well the drama played beyond nada. Now tell me the five letters as they truly are. If the five letters are just these, will they not become letters that perish? O Guru of grace, my refuge, tell me so that my error goes.

எழுத்துகள் ஒலிகள்; ஒலிகள் தோன்றி மறைகின்றன; வரிவடிவங்கள் மொழிக்கு மொழி மாறுகின்றன. அப்படியிருக்க அழியும் எழுத்துகள் எப்படி அழியாத முத்தியைத் தரும் என்பது சீடனின் நியாயமான கேள்வி. இது மந்திரத்தின் உண்மைப் பொருள் பற்றிய கேள்வி.
Explanation
Letters are sounds; sounds arise and fade; written forms change from language to language. Then how can perishable letters give imperishable liberation? That is the disciple's fair question. It is a question about the true meaning of a mantra.
