Duty to Society · Oppuravaridhal

This chapter teaches the duty to use one's wealth and ability for the good of the world. Like rain that falls without expecting return, like the village tank, the fruit-tree and the medicinal tree, wealth must serve others; one who does not serve is counted among the dead.

Introduction

After Dread of Evil Deeds comes Oppuravaridhal. 'Oppuravu' means to act in accord with the world, to give of one's resources according to the needs of society, to act with regard to the common good. 'Aridhal' means to understand its meaning, method and duty. So oppuravaridhal is knowing and doing one's duty to society. It is wider than charity; charity is giving to the poor, while oppuravu is using one's ability, knowledge, wealth and time in a fitting manner for public good.

The first verse takes the cloud as an example. The cloud pours rain and wants nothing in return. What can the world do to repay it? The second verse says that all the wealth earned by labour is for helping the worthy. The third praises that nothing better than oppuravu can be got either in the world of the gods or on earth. The fourth says that one who acts with fitness lives; the others are placed among the dead. The fifth to seventh verses use three similes, the village tank, the ripe tree and the medicinal tree, to show the nature of wealth that serves others.

The eighth verse says that those of clear vision who know their duty will not falter in helping even in times of straitened means. The ninth shows that for a man of good character, the inability to help is poverty. The last verse boldly affirms that if ruin comes from oppuravu, that ruin may be bought even at a price.

The excellence of the chapter is that it expresses beautifully the relationship between the individual and society. We are not born alone nor live alone. The village around us, water, land, education and language have all been given to us by others. We are indebted for them. To repay that debt is oppuravu.

In the world today this stands in many forms: volunteering, social responsibility, public funds, environmental protection. Protecting water bodies, planting trees, helping with education and medicine are all oppuravu. In Tamil culture digging tanks, building rest houses and setting up drinking-water stalls have been honoured since ancient times. Valluvar gives them a principle.

Chapter story

Bhagiratha Brings Down the Ganga

This is the story of Bhagiratha told in the Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana and in the Bhagavata Purana. When the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara of the Ikshvaku line went in search of the horse of the Ashvamedha sacrifice, they disturbed the penance of the sage Kapila. By the sage's glance they were reduced to ashes. For their souls to attain a good state, the waters of the Ganga flowing in heaven had to flow over their ashes. This duty continued from generation to generation.

Sagara's grandson Amshuman and his son Dilipa tried but could not bring the Ganga. Dilipa's son Bhagiratha handed the kingdom to his ministers and performed severe penance. His penance was not for his own good, but to give his forefathers a good state, and through that to benefit the world. After a thousand years of penance Brahma appeared.

Brahma said, "I will send the Ganga to earth. But the earth cannot bear her force. Only Shiva can bear it." Bhagiratha performed penance again for a year, toward Shiva. Pleased, Shiva agreed to receive the Ganga in his locks. The Ganga descended from the sky in a great flood and remained entangled for years in Shiva's locks. At Bhagiratha's renewed prayer, Shiva released a stream.

The Ganga flowed behind Bhagiratha's chariot as he led. On the way she flooded the hermitage of the sage Jahnu. In anger the sage drank her up. When Bhagiratha pleaded, he released her through his ear. For this the Ganga is also called Jahnavi. At last the Ganga reached the netherworld and touched the ashes of Sagara's sons. They attained liberation.

The finest aspect is that though the Ganga came for the good of one family, she gives water to millions of people today. She makes fields yield and cities grow; people attain purity on her banks. Bhagiratha aimed that his effort should serve others; he asked nothing for himself. To this day we call a hard effort 'bhagiratha prayatna'.

Another quality Bhagiratha showed was humility. He did not merely state his need to Brahma and Shiva; he admitted that his own strength was not enough and sought their help. One who labours for the public good must have the humility to know his limit and accept others' help. It also shows that oppuravu is not a heroic deed done alone but a joint work done by many.

In today's world, movements to protect rivers, efforts to desilt water bodies and tree-planting drives are all continuations of Bhagiratha's effort. As the Ganga came for Bhagiratha, the work we do in our generation will reach the next as water and shade. The effort that began for one family became the foundation of a civilisation: the strength of oppuravu is that a small aim can bring a great result.

This great effort that serves the world without expecting any return is the summit of oppuravu.
