Explanation

Here Valluvar gives a new definition of poverty. Generally poverty means lack of goods. But for the man of grace poverty is not lack of goods; it is the state of being unable to do the helps he wishes to do. 'Seyum neera seyyaadhu amaikalaa vaaru' is the state of being unable to refrain from doing the acts of help he habitually does, the sorrow of being unable to do them.

This reveals a deep truth of the human mind. For one who finds joy in helping others, inability to help is great sorrow. He will not mind his hunger; he will not mind his torn clothes. But if someone comes to his door for help and he cannot give, his heart grieves. That is poverty for him.

Another truth appears. One rich in goods but without a mind to help others is poor in mind. However much he gathers, the feeling that it is not enough torments him. But a man of grace, even with little wealth, feels rich if he can help to the extent possible.

So this verse redefines wealth itself. Wealth is not what we have but our capacity to give. Poverty is not having little but being unable to give.

This thought can change the priorities of our life. What matters is not how much we have gathered but how much we have been useful to others.

A story

The Gleaner Family and the Mongoose

This is a story told in the Ashvamedhika Parva of the Mahabharata. After the Kurukshetra war Yudhishthira performed a great Ashvamedha sacrifice. When the sacrifice was completed and gifts were given to all, a mongoose came. One half of its body was golden and the other half of ordinary colour. It mocked the sacrifice in the assembly: "This sacrifice does not equal a handful of flour given by a poor brahmin at Kurukshetra," it said.

Yudhishthira and the sages marvelled and asked for its story. The mongoose said, "At Kurukshetra, once a severe famine came. There was a brahmin family living by the practice of unchavritti, gleaning grains that lay scattered in the fields. In that family were four: father, mother, son and daughter-in-law. After many days of starvation, one day they got a little grain. They ground it into flour, and each took a share and began to eat.

"Then a guest came to the door. He was very hungry. The father took his own share of flour and gave it to him. The guest ate, but his hunger was not appeased. Then the mother said, 'Give him my share too. When my husband is hungry I cannot eat.' Then the son gave his share. Then the daughter-in-law gave hers. All four fasted and honoured the guest.

"That guest was the god Dharma himself. Pleased, he praised them and sent them all to heaven. At that time I came out of my burrow and rolled in the flour they had spilt. The half of my body touched by that flour turned golden. To make the other half golden I went to many sacrifices and rolled there. But nowhere did it change. In your sacrifice also my body did not change."
