Explanation

This verse speaks of the glory of oppuravu. 'Puththel ulagam' is the world of the gods, heaven. 'Eendu' is this world. Valluvar says that in heaven and on earth it is hard to obtain anything better than oppuravu. That is, the dharma called oppuravu gives equally high good for life in this world and in the next.

Why does he praise it so highly? Oppuravu joins the good of the individual and the good of society. It fills the gap between self-interest and others' interest. One who does oppuravu gives benefit to others; at the same time he gains satisfaction of mind, respect in society and meaning in life. In this world these are very rare riches.

There is another sense in 'peralaridhe'. Other good things exist, but may be easily obtained. The benefits of oppuravu, namely contentment, people's love and fame, cannot be bought with wealth. They come only to those who have done oppuravu.

The world of the gods is full of pleasures. There too there is no chance to do oppuravu, because no one lacks anything. So commentators explain that the chance to help others is a special privilege given to humans in this world. Using that chance is the fruit of human birth.

Of all the good things we may obtain in life, oppuravu is foremost; let us make it the aim of our lives.

A story

The Sacrifice of Sage Dadhichi

This is the story of the sage Dadhichi, mentioned in the Rig Veda and told at length in the Mahabharata, the Bhagavata Purana and the Brahmanda Purana. A great war took place between the gods and an asura named Vritra. Vritra, son of Tvashta, by Brahma's boon could not be killed by any weapon, dry or wet. The gods lost. Indra fled in fear because his thunderbolt was useless.

The gods appealed to Vishnu. Vishnu said, "A weapon made from the bones of the sage Dadhichi, who has gained strength through penance, alone will kill Vritra. Go to the sage and ask for his bones." It was a hard request. To ask a living person for his bones is to ask for his very life.

Indra and the gods went to Dadhichi's hermitage. With humility they explained their plight. Dadhichi showed no hesitation. "To use my body for the good of the world is my fortune. This body will perish some day. To perish serving others is best," he said. By his yogic power he released his life from the body. The gods received his bones.

The divine craftsman Vishvakarma made from those bones the very powerful weapon called Vajra. With that Vajra Indra killed Vritra. The gods again reached the heavens. The world gained safety.

Dadhichi asked nothing in return; he gave his very life for the public good. It is the great evidence that nothing better than this is found either here or in the world of the gods. Even today the highest gallantry award of India, the Param Vir Chakra, is designed in the form of the Vajra; Dadhichi's sacrifice is its source.
