Hospitality · Virundhompal

This chapter says that the very purpose of household life is to look after guests. Valluvar speaks of welcoming a guest with a cheerful face, feeding him, seeing him off and waiting for the next, and of not eating alone even if the food were nectar.

Introduction

In the chapter on household life, Valluvar said it was the householder's duty to care for five: the ancestors, the gods, guests, kin and oneself. Of these five he spreads out only hospitality into a chapter of its own, which shows the importance of this virtue. In Tamil culture hospitality is not mere courtesy; it is a way of life. The Upanishadic saying 'Atithi Devo Bhava', and the tradition of regarding the visitor as God, stress the same thing.

The ten verses show many angles of hospitality. The first says that the very purpose of household life is hospitality (81). The second says that to eat alone while a guest waits outside is not fit even if the food were nectar (82). The third and fourth say that no harm comes to a home that hosts and that Lakshmi stays there gladly (83, 84). The fifth and sixth speak of the prosperity of one who eats after feeding the guest, and of the fine feast the gods give to one who waits for those who come (85, 86). The seventh says the merit of hospitality depends on the worth of the guest (87). The eighth and ninth point to the emptiness of those who do not host (88, 89). The last, saying that a guest's heart is more delicate than the anicham flower, stresses the need for a cheerful face (90).

Commentators differ in places. In verse 85 Parimelazhagar takes 'vithum idal vendumo' as 'does his field even need sowing?', that is, it will grow of itself. In verse 86, for 'vaanaththavarkku nalvirundhu' there are two readings: he becomes a welcome guest of the gods, or the gods welcome him well. Either way the idea is one: hospitality brings blessing.

In the Hindu tradition hospitality holds a high place. The Kapota Upakhyana and the story of Mudgala in the Mahabharata, the feast of Bharadvaja in the Ramayana, and Mahabali and Vamana in the Bhagavata show a culture that regards the guest as God. In the Tamil Nayanar tradition too, feeding devotees is honoured as the foremost service.

In life today homes may be small and time short. But the essence of hospitality is not in a large feast; it is in a mind that welcomes with a bright face. A glass of water and a kind word, given with love, become nectar. The message of the chapter is that a home ready to welcome whoever comes to its door is a true home.

Chapter story

The Pigeon and the Fowler

The Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata tells a short but lofty story. It is the Kapota Upakhyana, the tale of the pigeons. Bhishma tells it to Yudhishthira while teaching him dharma. In a forest lived a cruel fowler. He lived by catching and killing birds.

One day a great rain poured in the forest. Shivering with cold, the fowler took shelter under a big tree. In his cage was a female pigeon he had caught earlier. In that tree her mate, a male pigeon, was lamenting that his companion had not returned. The female pigeon in the cage said, "My husband, this man is a guest who has come to our home. You must treat him well. Do not grieve for me."

The male pigeon heard these words and grew calm. "You are right. Though he caught my wife, he has now taken shelter in my home. It is my duty to serve him," it said, and welcomed the fowler. "You are suffering in the cold. See, I light a fire," it said, and brought dry leaves and made a fire.

The fowler warmed himself at the fire and felt some comfort. Then he said, "I am hungry." The pigeon had no grain or food to give him. "I will not send my guest away hungry," it thought, and decided to give its own body as food. It circled the fire three times and cast itself into that fire.

Seeing it, the fowler's heart melted. "What cruelty have I done! Such a tiny creature has given its body to me. I will never kill a living thing again," he cried. He at once released the female pigeon from the cage and threw away his net and cage.

The freed female pigeon, unable to bear the sight of her husband's body burning, entered the same fire. Then a chariot came down from the sky. The two pigeons, in beautiful forms, rose in it to the world of heaven, says the Mahabharata.

After this the fowler did penance in the forest. He left his former life of taking others' lives and lived a pure life. The act of the pigeon, who served even the man who had caught his wife, is the summit of the high dharma of caring for any guest.

This story is a summary of Valluvar's chapter. The purpose of household life is hospitality; one who gives even himself for it becomes a guest of the gods.
