Explanation

The last verse of the chapter ends with a beautiful simile. The anicham flower is very delicate; it wilts if merely smelled. More delicate still is the guest's heart; it wilts if one merely looks at him with a changed face, says Valluvar.

'Anicham' is a delicate flower mentioned in Sangam literature. That it wilts even when smelled is the poet's fancy for its fragility. Valluvar uses it in the section on love as well as an example of delicacy.

'Mukam thirindhu nokka' means to look with the face changed, the smile gone, a frown, an unwilling look. One such look is enough; the guest's heart wilts. However fine the food, if the face of the giver has no joy, it is not hospitality.

The verse beautifully stresses the importance of the cheerful face in hospitality. A guest comes not so much from hunger as from affection. That affection finds fullness when it is rightly welcomed.

It applies to our daily life too. A small change that appears on the face when we see someone arrive is noticed by him. Some may welcome in words, but the face gives them away.

At the same time it is a subtle counsel. Even if we are tired from other work, we should learn to deal gently with whoever comes, without showing that weariness. The guest is not responsible for our burdens.

Valluvar understood the delicacy of the human heart. In the Mahabharata, Krishna's refusal of Duryodhana's feast stands as the opposite side of this.

A story

Duryodhana's Feast and Krishna's Refusal

The Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata tells of Krishna going as an envoy. To avert war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, Krishna went to Hastinapura. He came to speak peace in Dhritarashtra's assembly. The townspeople welcomed him with great honour.

Krishna came to the palace and bowed to Dhritarashtra. Then he went to Duryodhana's mansion. Duryodhana welcomed him and invited him to a feast of fine foods. His mansion shone with wealth. But Krishna refused to eat that food.

Duryodhana asked why. Krishna said calmly, "A meal is fit to be accepted when it is given with love and joy, or when the eater is in great distress. You hold no love for me, and I am not in distress. So I shall not eat your food." This is a noble saying that occurs in the Mahabharata.

From there Krishna went to the house of Vidura. Vidura was a very simple man. But with a bright face and love he set simple food before Krishna. Krishna ate it happily. "The simple food of your love is nectar to me," he said. Vidura's home became sacred that day.

In this event there are two houses. In one, a mansion rich in wealth and a lavish meal, but treachery in the mind. In the other, a simple home and simple food, but love on the face. It is clear which the Lord chose.

Duryodhana, through the scheme hidden in his feast, made the guest's heart wilt. Krishna sensed it at once. As the anicham wilts when smelled, the guest's heart wilts on seeing a changed face.

This event stands as a truth beyond time: the life of a feast is not in the food but in the truth of the welcome.
