Explanation

This verse shows wealth and poverty from a new angle. One who has wealth but does not host guests is poor amid his possessions. Such folly is found only among the unwise.

'Udaimaiyul inmai' is a paradox. Udaimai is having, inmai is lack. Valluvar joins the two to point to the state of being poor in wealth. A person is not rich just because he has money; it is wealth only when there is a mind to share it.

'Madamai' is ignorance, lack of wisdom. 'Madavaar' are the unwise. Parimelazhagar takes 'madavaarkan undu' as 'exists only among the unwise'. That is, the wise, having wealth, will share it.

This may seem a harsh word. But what Valluvar states is a practical truth. Unshared wealth is a useless burden. Fear of guarding it, worry and loneliness settle within. So though he is rich, he is poor in mind.

At the same time one of small possessions who has a mind to share what he eats is truly rich. The verse also hints at the opposite, 'wealth amid poverty'.

In today's world many make gathering money the goal of life. But this verse reminds us that a life that does not know the joy of sharing is empty however much it holds.

A tale of a feast between Kubera and Ganesha illustrates this truth with humour.

A story

Kubera's Feast and Ganesha's Hunger

This is a sweet story current in the Hindu tradition. Kubera is the lord of wealth and king of Alakapuri. He often thought proudly of the wealth he had. One day, wishing to show his wealth to the world, he went to Kailasa and invited Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati to dine in his house.

Shiva sensed the pride in his heart. Smiling, he said, "We have no time. I shall send our son Ganesha." Kubera was shocked but agreed. Ganesha came to Kubera's palace.

Kubera proudly prepared a thousand kinds of food. He served on golden plates. Ganesha began to eat. Everything served was finished in a short while. He asked for more and more. All the food in the palace kitchens ran out. Ganesha, still unsatisfied, said, "I want more!"

Kubera ordered more food brought. His storehouses emptied. Ganesha began to eat the golden plates. Kubera, frightened, ran to Kailasa. He fell at Shiva's feet and begged, "Forgive my pride."

Goddess Parvati smiled gently, took a little parched rice in her hand, and came. "Give this with love," she said to Kubera. Kubera humbly gave it to Ganesha. When he ate it, Ganesha said happily, "Now my hunger is satisfied."

The story is told in many forms, but the message is one. A thousand dishes given without love do not satisfy hunger; a handful of rice given with humility and love satisfies everyone. A feast given with pride, though there be wealth, is empty.

Kubera had wealth, but at that time he lacked the love to share it. So he saw poverty amid possessions. Only after humility came did he truly become rich.

To reflect on

Do I share what I have out of love, or to show what I have?
