Explanation

So far the heroine has spoken; from this verse the lover speaks. What he says is very tender. While holding her in embrace, he loosened his arms a little; it was a deed that lasted a moment. But in that very moment her forehead turned pale. A faint shadow of the fear that separation was coming spread across her face at once. The word 'pedhai' here does not mean ignorance; it means the guilelessness of one who knows nothing of the world's trickery. Such a pure heart trembles even at a small loosening.

The pallor appearing on the forehead is an important touch. The beauty of a face shows first in the forehead. If the colour changes there, everybody sees it. The commentators take 'ookka' to mean 'loosened', though some read it as 'removed'. In either case a small thing done by the lover without thinking becomes a great shock to the heroine. Seeing it, the lover measures the depth of her love, and in his words are heard both tenderness and a sense of guilt.

In relationships today too, small acts have large effects. A glance, a delay, even a change of tone can shake the mind of the one we love. So attentiveness in love lies not in big gifts but in the gentleness of small acts. If we realise how much the small things we do without thinking echo in another's heart, our behaviour will grow gracious.

A story

Valli's Millet Field

This is a part of the story of Murugan's marriage with Valli, honoured in the Kanda Puranam and in the Tamil devotional tradition.

In the forest of Valli Hill, Valli grew up as the daughter of the hunter chief Nambirajan. She sat on a platform to guard the millet field and drove away parrots with her sling. One day Murugan came there in the form of a hunter and spoke with her. Later he came again as an old man and tested her. Valli did not understand his love at first; but from the day she saw him her mind sought him.

From time to time Murugan moved away from her. After love grew, in every moment when he even slightly relaxed his hold, Valli's face dimmed. A small shadow spread across her forehead. Murugan understood that it was a delicate sign of her love. Her guileless heart could not bear even a moment's parting.

Once, as Murugan stood apart from her, she feared he was leaving her and caught his hand. Just then an elephant came trumpeting, and in fear she embraced him, says the Purana. Tradition holds that the elephant was really Ganesha, helping his brother.

In the end the marriage was completed with the consent of Valli's kinsfolk. Valli's guilelessness and Murugan's tenderness have made Tamil tradition celebrate their love to this day.

This verse shows just such a delicate love that trembles at the least loosening. The shadow that spread across Valli's face is a sign of the same tenderness.
