Wasting Away · Uruppunalanazhidhal

This chapter shows how the grief of separation does not stay hidden in the mind but appears in the eyes, the shoulders and the slipping bangles, announcing the depth of love to the whole world. The heroine's pale eyes and thinned arms become witnesses of the beloved's absence, and the lover, too, speaks in distress at the sight of her wasting.

Introduction

This chapter, Uruppunalan Azhidhal, belongs to the Karpiyal section of the Kamathuppaal. 'Uruppu' means the parts of the body and 'nalan' their beauty, so the chapter sings of the fading of the body's beauty through separation. In earlier chapters the heroine's grief came out in thoughts, in lamentations and in her dislike of the evening hour. Here it turns into visible changes: pale eyes, thinned shoulders and slipping bangles. Sorrow that began in the heart now comes down into the body and stands as evidence for everyone to see. That is the development of the chapter.

In the old Tamil akam tradition, 'pasalai' is the golden pallor that spreads over the body during the separation of lovers. It is a witness that cannot be hidden. Even if the heroine does not speak her sorrow aloud, her body speaks it for her. The words that recur in these verses, 'seems to tell', 'seems to announce', 'proclaims', show a little drama in which the parts of the body speak. Eyes, shoulders and bangles each stand like witnesses pleading on the heroine's behalf. As evidence in a court reveals the truth, so here the limbs reveal the truth of love.

In the first seven verses the heroine speaks. She tells how her eyes are ashamed before fragrant flowers, how her pale and tearful eyes speak of her beloved's lack of grace, how the shoulders that swelled on the wedding day now announce his departure, and how her bangles slip. Yet there is a subtlety here: she does not want the world to call her beloved cruel. She grieves that blame for him arises from the thinning of her body. In the seventh verse she thinks of sending her own heart as a messenger. In the last three verses it is the lover who speaks. He melts at the sight of her tenderness, for even a breath of air passing between them in embrace turns her pale, and he feels his own eyes grieve at the pallor of hers.

The chapter has a word for our own life as well. Today medicine too accepts that sorrow of the heart shows in the body. We know that when food, sleep and light are lacking the mind's health suffers, and that when the mind suffers the body grows thin. If we notice that someone we love is growing thin, the chapter reminds us that it may be the voice of their heart, and that we should ask with love and listen. The eye that sees an unspoken sorrow is the eye of true affection.

Chapter story

Uma's Penance

This is the story of Parvati from Kalidasa's epic poem, the Kumarasambhava.

Born as the daughter of the king of the Himalaya, Parvati wished from childhood to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Shiva was then deep in meditation. So that a son might be born to him who could defeat the asura Taraka, the gods sent Kama, the god of love, to disturb his penance, and Kama was burnt to ashes in the fire of Shiva's third eye. Parvati saw this and her heart broke. She understood that her beauty, her ornaments and her flowers had not touched the heart of that Lord.

That day she made a decision. What beauty cannot win, she would win by tapas. She took off her ornaments, put aside silks for a garment of bark, and gave up flower garlands. On the mountain she stood in sun, mist and rain. First she lived on leaves alone; later she gave up even leaves. Tradition says that is how she came to be called Aparna. Her mother Mena tenderly tried to stop her, saying 'U ma', do not, and the Puranic tradition says the name Uma comes from that.

Her body grew thinner day by day. The eyes that had shone like flowers and the delicate shoulders lost some of their glow in the heat of the penance. Yet in that thinness a new light was born, the light of a steadfast love. When her friends asked in grief why she put herself through such hardship, she smiled and spoke only of her goal. The poet sings that even the animals that came to her hermitage grew calm and fearless near her.

At last Lord Shiva came in disguise, as a young celibate student, to test her firmness. When he spoke ill of Shiva, Parvati answered in anger and tried to walk away. Seeing her love and her resolve, the Lord appeared in his true form and accepted her, the poem tells. Their wedding took place with splendour in the palace of the Himalaya, and their son Kumara, tradition says, defeated Taraka.

It is sad when the beauty of the body fades. But this story shows how intensity of love can turn even that thinness into a kind of beauty. As the drooping shoulders and pale eyes of Valluvar's heroine bear witness to the depth of her love, Parvati's wasted body proclaimed the strength of hers.

We see this in our own lives as well. We grieve at the thinness of those who exhaust themselves for a goal or for someone's love. But the light on their faces gives that grief a meaning. We should honour that light and also stand by them to guard their health.

Key lessons

  • The sorrow of the heart shows in the body, so changes in a loved one's body deserve loving attention.
  • The silent signs that speak without words are sometimes the best evidence.
  • A truly loving heart cannot bear it when others blame the beloved; this is the nature of love.
  • Tender love cannot bear even a small gap, and both partners share the duty of guarding it.
  • Sharing sorrow openly, and listening with compassion, gives strength to relationships.
