Explanation

In the first couplet Valluvar spoke of not harming for the sake of wealth; in this one he states a harder case: not retaliating even against one who has harmed us out of hatred. Karuththu means with anger or hatred; maruththu means in return. Not giving evil in return for the evil done is the creed of the stainless.

Naturally people think of paying back those who hurt them, and call it "justice". Valluvar shows a higher way. Retaliation does not end evil; it increases it. One evil cannot stop another; it is like putting fire on fire.

It also helps protect the purity of one's own mind. If we do harm when others have harmed us, our mind becomes like theirs. The state of being maasatrar, stainless, is one that does not change by others' acts.

It should be clear this is not cowardice. We have the right to protect ourselves and oppose injustice. What Valluvar says is to avoid giving pain with the intent of revenge. That is a sign of strength of mind, and the next couplets explain its reasons.

To grasp the depth of this verse we should think about the nature of revenge. If one retaliates for harm, the other retaliates again, and the harm lengthens into a chain. One who has the strength to break that chain is the maasatrar, the stainless. He keeps his mind from bitterness.

A story

Appar and the Lime Kiln

Tirunavukkarasar, also called Appar, is one of the three saints who sang the Tevaram in the twelve Tirumurais. Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam tells his life at length. Tradition says that Appar in youth was a Jain monk and later returned to the Shaiva path. The Jains could not bear his change of heart. They told the Pallava king Mahendravarman about Appar and begged him to punish him.

The story says the king had Appar thrown into a lime kiln. Appar sang a hymn to the Lord beginning "Maasil veenaiyum maalai mathiyamum". The kiln became cool to him like a spring shade. Then they gave him milk mixed with poison, which did nothing to him. They set a rutting elephant on him, and it bowed to him and went away. At last they tied him to a stone and threw him into the sea; when he sang the hymn "Sotrunai vedhiyan" the stone floated as a raft and carried him to shore.

After all these cruelties Appar thought no harm to anyone. He did not curse the Jains who tormented him nor the king. In the end, the Periya Puranam says, the king recognised his error and embraced the Shaiva path, and Appar accepted him with compassion. This change came not by force but by Appar's calm and grace.

Throughout his life Appar did uzhavaaram, the work of cleaning temples with a hoe, and sang boldly, "Naamaarkkum kudiyallom namanai anjom", "we are subject to none, we fear not even death". His courage came not from enmity but from faith in God.

Appar's life shows the true meaning of "Even toward those who, in hatred, did harm, not doing harm in return is the creed of the stainless." Not for a moment did a thought of revenge arise in his mind against those who hurt him.
