Explanation

This is one of the most famous couplets in the Kural. We may think those who do evil must be punished. Valluvar shows a new way: do them such good that they are ashamed, and leave it. Oruththal means punishing; nannayam means good grace, a kindly deed.

Why is this a punishment? One who has done harm expects harm in return. When instead he receives kindness, his mind shrinks. He recognises his fault and is ashamed. That shame has the power to change his mind. Bodily punishment hurts the body; this punishment mends the mind.

The word seydhuvidal, "doing and leaving it", is also important. After doing the good one should forget it and not point it out. If it is pointed out it becomes again a punishment and a victory. Pure kindness must be free of expectation.

Commentators give many illustrations. In Indian tradition this is the way of ahimsa. It is said Mahatma Gandhi loved this couplet greatly. In daily life too we can see how much change occurs if we help someone who has hurt us. Revenge begins a cycle; kindness ends it.

This verse applies to bringing up children too. Parents know how deeply a child who has erred mends when made lovingly to realise the mistake, more than when punished severely. In our tradition we see the same in the guru-disciple relation. Valluvar recommends this way at the social level as well. Correcting a wrong by doing good is the highest form of punishment.

A story

Ramanuja and Yadava Prakasha

Biographies of the Vaishnava teacher Ramanuja describe an incident about him. This is a tradition from the guruparampara texts; small details may vary from text to text. In youth Ramanuja studied Vedanta in Kanchipuram under an Advaita teacher, Yadava Prakasha. Ramanuja's way of explaining the Upanishads differed from his teacher's. In some places he gently corrected the teacher's view.

Yadava Prakasha was disturbed to see his student surpass him. Tradition says that with his disciples he planned, under the name of a pilgrimage to Kashi, to take Ramanuja and drown him in the Ganga. Ramanuja's cousin Govinda learned of the plot and warned him. The story says Ramanuja escaped through the forest and by the Lord's grace came back to Kanchipuram.

Even after this, Ramanuja did not hate his teacher. Later Yadava Prakasha, recognising his fault, by his mother's advice and his own change of heart, came and became Ramanuja's disciple, it is said. Ramanuja lovingly accepted one who had thought harm to him; he is said to have been given the name Govinda Jiyar. Tradition also says he wrote a work on the Vaishnava path.

Another incident also shows Ramanuja's gentleness. Tradition says he did not condemn some who tried to kill him with poison. Instead of punishing, he chose the way of mending.

This episode is a fine expression of "To punish those who did harm, do them a kindness so they are ashamed." Ramanuja punished with compassion, and that compassion changed his own teacher.

To reflect on

Who might be changed more by an unexpected kindness from you than by any rebuke?
