Explanation

This couplet warns of the result of doing harm. Seyyaamal serrarkkum is given two senses. One: even to those who hated us though we did them no harm. The other: even to those who have not yet turned their hatred into action. In both, Valluvar says doing evil even to one who hated without cause brings uyyaa vizhumam.

Uyyaa means "from which there is no escape"; vizhumam is suffering or distress. So the doer of harm will reach suffering he cannot escape. This is related to the idea of karma, but beyond that there is a practical truth. In the doer's mind guilt stays, in relations enmity, and in society a bad name.

The previous couplet said not to retaliate against those who harmed us. This one goes a step further and indicates that if we harm even those who did us no wrong, the consequence is still more terrible. That is, harm done neither as punishment nor as revenge but out of mere hostility is the most cruel.

Commentators explain: if someone hates us for no reason, doing harm to him lowers us. His hatred is his fault; if we join it, it becomes our fault too. Rising above hostility is our victory.

The depth of the word uyyaa deserves notice. Uyidhal means to escape, to survive, to be saved. The idea is that the doer of harm cannot run anywhere and escape. He carries that suffering within himself. Wherever he goes the memory of his evil goes with him. The first injury of evil, therefore, falls on the evildoer himself.

A story

The Lacquer House and Duryodhana

The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata relates the episode of the lacquer house. When the news came that Yudhishthira would be crowned crown prince, Duryodhana was filled with envy. The Pandavas had done him no harm. Yet he hated them without cause. He persuaded his father Dhritarashtra to have them sent to a city called Varanavata.

In that city an engineer, Purochana, built a house of lac, ghee, fat and other easily inflammable materials. The plan was to set fire to it at night while the Pandavas lived there and burn them. But Vidura learned of the plot and secretly warned Yudhishthira in veiled words. A worker dug a tunnel so they could escape.

One night, the Mahabharata says, the Pandavas themselves set fire to the house and escaped through the tunnel. Purochana died in the fire. Because a poor woman and her five sons had been staying there, they too died in the fire. It was believed at Hastinapura that the Pandavas were dead. Duryodhana rejoiced.

But the Pandavas were alive; they married Draupadi and emerged again. The plot he made against those who had not harmed him turned back upon him. His name was stained and the hatred of elders fell upon him. In the end in the Kurukshetra war he and his brothers perished.

This is a deep illustration of "If one does harm even to those who hated him without cause, it brings unescapable suffering." Hatred without cause, and the harm done as its result, came to him as suffering he could not escape.
