Explanation

This verse gives the simplest answer to what dharma is. To rejoice in the face, look kindly and speak a sweet word from the heart is dharma. One can do dharma without great sacrifices or austerities.

Three acts are joined here: a bright face, a kind look and a sweet word. They are a whole made of body language and speech together. If the word alone is sweet and the face frowns, it is not complete dharma. If only the face smiles and the heart is empty, it is not either. All three must agree.

'Agaththaanaam' is arising from the heart. This is very important. Valluvar does not count artificial sweetness as dharma. Only when there is love in the heart and it shows in the face and speech is it dharma.

For 'insolinadhe aram', Parimelazhagar explains it as dharma consisting of the sweet word. That is, the sweet word is itself a virtue. Some see dharma as dwelling in the sweet word. In both, the idea is one.

This simple virtue can be done by everyone. One without wealth cannot give charity; one without bodily strength cannot render service. But everyone can give a kind look and word. So this is a democratic virtue.

To say a smile and thanks to the bus conductor, the milkman, the shopkeeper or the neighbour we meet every day may seem a small act. But Valluvar regards it as a great virtue.

The scene of Dasharatha welcoming Vishvamitra is a sweet commentary on this verse.

A story

Dasharatha Welcomes Vishvamitra

In the Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana the scene of King Dasharatha welcoming Vishvamitra is described. It was the time when Dasharatha had gained sons through the Putrakameshti sacrifice and they were growing up. One day, as he sat in court, the gatekeeper brought word that the sage Vishvamitra, mighty in austerity, had come.

On hearing the news Dasharatha rose at once. With his preceptor Vasishtha he hurried to the gate. Seeing the sage, his face brightened. He bowed with folded hands. He offered arghya in due order and gave water to wash the feet.

"Sage, your coming gives joy as if nectar had been found. It is like rain falling on parched land. This is a great merit I have earned. Tell me the reason you came. I shall do all that I can," Dasharatha spoke lovingly, as Valmiki describes.

The joy on the king's face, the gentleness in his words and the truth in his heart pleased Vishvamitra. He blessed Dasharatha. "Dasharatha, you speak as befits your line. In your words I see Vasishtha's grace," he said.

Then the sage stated the purpose of his visit. He asked that Rama and Lakshmana be sent with him to protect his sacrifice. Dasharatha showed great hesitation. By Vasishtha's counsel he finally agreed. That is another story; here our subject is only the welcome.

Because Vishvamitra had seen the king's face and heard his words, he did not hesitate to ask. When a king welcomes with humility, the sage feels firmness and trust. This scene is proof of how much a kind look and sweet word open a person's heart.

The message of the verse, that dharma is to rejoice in the face, look kindly and speak a sweet word from the heart, is fully seen in this welcome.
