Explanation

This verse tells the social benefit of the sweet word. It says that when one seeks beneficial deeds and speaks sweet words, evil lessens and virtue grows. That is, the sweet word is not only a personal good; it has the power to set the world on the right path.

'Allavai' are things that are not good, evils. 'Theya' is wane, decrease. 'Aram perugum' is the growth of the good path. These two are connected. As darkness goes when light comes, evil naturally decreases when virtue grows.

For 'nallavai naadi' commentators differ. Parimelazhagar and others take it as desiring good things, beneficial deeds. Some say it means seeking the assembly of the good. In both, the idea is that there must be good thought and good company.

How does the sweet word wear away evil? A harsh word grows anger; anger grows conflict; conflict grows blame. A sweet word cuts that chain. Anger subsides, quarrel lessens, harmony grows.

Also, those near a person of sweet speech hesitate to do evil. His gentle way creates a dharmic atmosphere. If one speaks sweetly in a family or workplace, the whole atmosphere softens.

So there is a simple route to social good: each person speaking sweetly. The sweet word does what laws cannot.

Prahlada's sweet teaching to the asura boys, his classmates, is a fine example.

A story

Prahlada's Words to the Asura Boys

The seventh book of the Bhagavata Purana describes at length the talk Prahlada gave to his classmates. The children of the asura line, at the command of Hiranyakashipu, studied in the gurukula under asura teachers. The teachers Shanda and Amarka taught them the art of war, statecraft and the asura way.

One day the teachers were away. In their absence the boys gathered and called him to play. Prahlada looked at them lovingly and began, "Friends, this life is short. It is very good to seek the right path even in young age."

He did not speak harshly; he did not belittle the asuras. He spoke gently, as a friend, like telling a story. "We are all creations of one Lord. It is easy to think of him; no wealth is needed for it. Only the mind is enough," he said. The children listened closely.

He explained in simple words what the sage Narada had told his mother while he was in the womb and which he had heard, and that devotion to God is the fruit of life. "The pleasures of this world last a few days; love toward God is lasting," he said.

The asura boys were changed in mind by his sweet words. They too began to sing of the Lord with Prahlada. The teachers, learning of it, grew afraid and went to Hiranyakashipu to complain. The king was angry. But by then Prahlada's sweet words had changed the minds of many boys.

Thus the sweet word spoken by one boy reduced evil in the asura line and increased virtue. He frightened no one, he argued with no one; he won by sweetness alone.

This is the exact example of what the verse says: when one seeks the good and speaks sweet words, evil wanes and virtue grows.

Where could a gentle word of mine, instead of an argument, turn someone toward the good?
