Explanation

This verse names two qualities of a good word. One, it is useful. Two, it never departs from good quality. Such a word, it says, gives rise to goodness and justice.

'Payan eendru' is a word that bears use, that is, benefits the hearer. It is not enough to be merely sweet; it must carry real good and useful content. Advice, guidance and information must help the hearer.

'Panpin thalaippiriyaa' is not departing from good quality. That is, the word is accompanied by gentleness, honesty and humility. Even a useful word becomes departing from quality if it is harsh.

For 'nayan eendru nanri payakkum', Parimelazhagar gives the sense of giving nayam, that is, justice and love, and yielding good. Some take 'nayan' as friendship. In both, the benefit is making social relations good.

So the best word faces two tests: does it bring benefit? Is it said with good quality? Some words are useful but harsh; some are sweet but empty. Valluvar seeks the one that joins both.

The words of teacher, doctor, friend and parent should be so. The ability to tell the truth without hiding it, yet with love, is the mark of the best guidance.

Krishna's counsel to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita is a high example of this verse.

A story

Krishna's Teaching to Arjuna

The Bhagavad Gita occurs in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. It was the time when the two armies stood face to face on the field of Kurukshetra. Arjuna said to Krishna, "Place my chariot between the two armies." Krishna did so.

Arjuna looked at those standing opposite. Among them were his grandsire Bhishma, his teacher Drona, relatives and friends. His mind trembled. His hands weakened. The bow slipped. "Krishna, I do not want the kingdom I would get by killing these," he said, and sat in the chariot weeping.

At that moment Krishna did not rebuke him. Vyasa describes him as beginning to speak calmly with a smile. "Arjuna, the wise do not grieve for the dead or for the living," he began. His words were the words of a loving friend.

Krishna explained the indestructibility of the self. He explained in many ways: do your duty, do not hope for the fruit, keep your mind steady. Arjuna asked questions; Krishna answered each with patience. He never spoke to him harshly, yet he did not hide the truth.

That teaching was useful. Arjuna's confusion was resolved. It did not depart from good quality. Each counsel was said with love. So Arjuna said at the end, "My delusion is gone. By your grace clarity has arisen in me. I shall do as you say."

The Gita is read throughout the world even today. People of many faiths and cultures draw guidance from it. The reason is that the counsel in it arose from love, is useful and is free from harshness.

A word that helps a person does good to him and brings justice to the world too. Arjuna's return to stand in the dharma war was the fruit of the Gita's sweet word.

To reflect on

When I advise someone, is my word both useful to them and kind in the way it is said?
