Explanation

This verse tells the full fruit of the sweet word: joy in both this life and the next. But there is a condition that the sweet word must be one 'free of smallness'.

'Sirumai' is pettiness, meanness. It may denote flaws of mind such as selfishness, envy and deceit. Some speak sweetly, but with cunning in it. They flatter for their own gain. That is a sweet word mixed with smallness; it does not give joy in this or the next world.

A sweet word free of smallness is one spoken with largeness of heart, thinking of the good of others, without greed. Such a word gives joy to the speaker and the hearer.

In 'immaiyum marumaiyum' the Hindu doctrine of karma shows. The sweet word gives friendship, respect and peace in this life. It is believed to continue as the fruit of merit in the next.

In practice we may take the next life as the continuing consequence of our acts. Today's sweet word blossoms as tomorrow's relationship and the culture of the next generation. The sweet words we utter shape how our children speak.

So the sweet word is like an investment. If smallness is mixed in, it turns bitter; if it is pure, it gives lasting joy.

Yudhishthira's answers to the Yaksha, and the choice he made, are a fine example of this.

A story

Yudhishthira's Answers to the Yaksha

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata has the episode called Yaksha Prashna. It was when the Pandavas were in exile. A deer ran off with a brahmin's fire-sticks, and the Pandavas went in search to recover them. Thirsty, Nakula was the first to reach a pool. At the pool's edge a Yaksha's voice said, "Drink the water only after answering my questions."

Nakula ignored it and drank; he at once fell lifeless. Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima did likewise and fell. At last Yudhishthira came. Seeing his brothers lying fallen, he was shaken. When the Yaksha gave the same warning, he said calmly, "Ask, I shall answer."

The Yaksha asked many questions. When he asked, "What is the greatest wonder in the world?", Yudhishthira said, "Every day we see living beings die; yet the others think they will live for ever. That is the greatest wonder." When asked, "What makes a man happy?", he said, "Doing good." In each answer there was no harshness; there was calm and wisdom.

The Yaksha was pleased. "I shall revive one of your brothers. Whom do you wish?" he said. Without hesitation Yudhishthira said, "Raise Nakula." The Yaksha was amazed. "Why Nakula, and not Bhima or Arjuna?" he asked.

Yudhishthira answered, "My father Pandu had two wives, Kunti and Madri. Kunti has at least me as a son. Madri too should have at least one son. So I choose Nakula." This answer showed his largeness of heart and righteousness.

The Yaksha then appeared in his true form as the god Dharma. Seeing the honesty and magnanimity of his son Yudhishthira, he was pleased and revived all the brothers, says the Mahabharata.

There was no smallness in Yudhishthira's word or deed. So he got his brothers' rescue in this life and the blessing of the god Dharma beyond.

To reflect on

Is there any smallness hidden in the sweet things I say, such as flattery or self-interest?
