Explanation

Valluvar tells here what we should think when a friend does something that pains us. He says it will be one of two: folly or great familiarity. 'Pedhaimai' is ignorance: the friend may have acted without knowing the effect. 'Perungizhamai' is great liberty: the friend may have overstepped because of his closeness to us. Neither is ill intent. So instead of being angry we should try to understand him.

The verse gives a psychological device. When a friend hurts us it is easy to think at once, 'He did it on purpose,' and that thought breaks a friendship. Valluvar offers two other possibilities. When we think so, our anger cools and the friendship is protected. 'Nothakka' means what causes us pain; so he refers not to a small fault but to acts that truly hurt.

This does not mean we must accept all faults blindly. A person who repeatedly harms on purpose is of another kind, for whom the advice of the chapter on examining friends applies. But the habit of looking first with love at a single hurt from an old friend preserves relationships for a long time.

Often the pain a friend causes is actually a measure of the closeness. Nobody who is a stranger can wound us deeply; only those whom we have let in can. Seeing it so, we may even find in the hurt a sign of the bond.

A story

Arjuna Asks Forgiveness

In the eleventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita comes a moving scene. Arjuna asked Krishna, "Show me your true cosmic form." Krishna showed his universal form. Countless faces, eyes and weapons, a light like fire, and the destroying aspect of time were seen in it. Arjuna trembled with fear.

At that moment Arjuna remembered his old conduct. "Not knowing he was so great, I called him 'Krishna, Yadava, friend' with familiarity. In play, at meals, alone and before many, did I perhaps insult him?" he thought, shaken. The Gita describes this.

Arjuna bowed before Krishna and prayed, "As a father forgives a son, as a friend forgives a friend, as a lover forgives the beloved, please forgive my faults," says the Gita. He had acted with no evil intention; his acts came from the liberty of friendship.

Out of the liberty of friendship, Arjuna had commanded Krishna many times as he sat as charioteer, and Krishna did these gladly. This liberty was the sign of the trust between them. We may call it 'perungizhamai'.

Krishna comforted him with affection. He showed his human form again and calmed his fear. He did not count anything that came out of the liberty of friendship as a fault. Rather, tradition suggests, it was because of that liberty that so deep a dialogue with Arjuna had been possible.

Here we see both folly and great familiarity. Arjuna's acts came from his ignorance and from his closeness. Krishna understood them exactly so.

When someone close hurt you last, did you consider it might be folly or familiarity before you decided it was malice?
