Explanation

This verse offers two images. First, 'kezhuthakaimai' is a limb of friendship. As the hand and foot are parts of the body, intimacy with liberty is an essential part of friendship. A friendship without it is like a body without a limb. The second image is salt. As salt gives flavour to food, it is the duty of the noble to add the liberty of closeness to friendship and keep its savour, says Valluvar.

For 'matradharku uppaadhal' the commentators give different readings. One group takes it as being the one who gives savour to friendship; another as the one who preserves friendship from spoiling, as salt preserves food. Salt does both, flavouring and preserving, so both readings fit. The noble person both flavours and guards a friendship.

In 'saanror kadan' there is also advice. It is the elders' responsibility not to be harsh with a friend who behaves with liberty, but to help that liberty to endure and to grow. In today's life we can see it in families and workplaces: the elder who receives closeness lovingly, rather than blocking it in the name of formality, is the salt of relationships.

Think too of how salt is used: in small quantity, unseen, and noticed only when missing. The noble person's part in friendship is much the same. He does not dominate the friendship; he simply makes it taste like itself.

A story

Two Saints at Vedaranyam

Among the Nayanmars, Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) and Thirugnanasambandar were contemporaries. Appar was elder; Sambandar younger. But there was a special affection between them. Sambandar lovingly called Appar 'Appare' (father), and it became his lasting name. Appar honoured Sambandar as his younger companion.

They went together to visit many shrines. Once they reached the place called Thirumaraikadu. Tradition says that the temple door there had long remained closed and unopened. Because the Vedas themselves were said to have worshipped there, it was called a door closed by the Vedas. The people went in and worshipped by the side entrance.

Appar stepped forward and sang a hymn with melting heart: "Can the door of the Lord's temple stay shut like this?" It is said that with each verse the door began to open slowly, and by the end of the hymn it stood fully open. The people marvelled and bowed.

They also shared a sense of humour. Though both were deeply devout before the Lord, they spoke to each other with teasing and ease, and this simplicity came out charmingly in their hymns. Intimate friendship is no deficiency in devotion; it is the salt of devotion.

That night Sambandar said to Appar, "Appare, the door has opened, but we have not learnt how to close it again." Appar smiled. "You close it, my young friend, and I shall watch," he said. Tradition says that when Sambandar sang a hymn the door closed by itself, and that so the two acted freely before the Lord, each through his own song.

Their relationship is a fine example of intimate liberty. It was a bond in which one completes what the other has begun, one mends the other's lack with love, and the elder honours the younger. Like salt added to unsalted food, each made up the other's lack.
