Explanation

This verse is about a friendship that begins in one generation and continues into the next. Between some families friendship has run since the grandfathers' days. It began at some moment and has come down unbroken through the line. 'Kedaa vazhivandha kenmai' is friendship that has come down the family way without breaking. Valluvar says the world 'vizhaiyum', desires and respects, the person who keeps that friendship without leaving it.

The verse says two things. One: friendship can last as a family tradition, not only between two individuals. Two: a person who keeps such continuity earns the world's respect, because time has already shown him trustworthy. One who honours his father's friend and passes the bond to his own children becomes a lesson to the world.

In today's fast life many who have migrated to cities have forgotten their family's old friendships. They do not even introduce their parents' friends. To preserve the network of friendship our ancestors grew is a cultural responsibility. By it village and kin grow strong.

There is a quiet economy in it too. An inherited friendship comes with trust already built and stories already shared, which no amount of money can buy in a short time. Whoever takes up that inheritance and adds to it leaves his own children richer.

A story

Five Generations of Friendship

In Kanchipuram a family of weavers and a family of dyers had been friends for five generations. Rangasamy, the weaver family's ancestor, first made friends with Munusamy, the dyer family's ancestor. That friendship later became a tradition of both families.

Every year in the month of Aadi, both families went together to the Amman temple. The weaver family wove a silk sari and offered it to the goddess; the dyer family prepared the natural dye for it. They had done this for hundreds of years.

In the present generation, Karthik, a young man of the weaver family, returned after studying abroad. He knew about new machines and chemical dyes. Some friends told him, "You can leave this old dyer family and contract with a modern dye company."

Manikandan's father, with tears in his eyes, said to Karthik, "The dream your grandfather and mine dreamt, you are fulfilling today." The two youths opened the old account books and read them; in them the help each family had given the other was written line by line.

Karthik looked at his grandfather's old account book. In it were written the help and trust of Munusamy's family. He took a decision. "Let us learn the new technology together with the old dyers," he said. He sent the young dyer Manikandan for training abroad.

The townspeople saw this and praised him. Everyone respected the youth who renewed a five-generation friendship rather than abandoning it. His shop's reputation rose, and foreign merchants sought him out.
