Explanation

The last verse of this chapter names the reward of familiarity. Those who do not depart from good nature toward old friends, who always keep their good disposition with them, will be desired even by 'vizhaiyaar', those who desire none. 'Vizhaiyaar' means those who do not desire; it may mean enemies, or those hardened people who attach themselves to none. In either sense, the esteem of one with such a nature rises so high that even they change their minds and love him.

This is a social result of friendship. Everyone observes a person who does not lessen love and respect towards old friends. Because this conduct is a mark of his character, even his opponents inwardly respect him; for in their hearts too is a wish for someone so dependable.

In today's world we see people who abandon old friends as soon as position and wealth grow. They rise but fall in others' minds. One who remains simple with old friends rises still higher in the minds of others the higher he goes. This is the great prize of familiarity.

The verse also closes the chapter fittingly. It began with a definition of familiarity as not cutting down the friend's rights; it ends by showing that the very same conduct wins the world's affection. What looks like a private loyalty turns out to be a public virtue.

A story

Bharata and Guha

In the Ramayana, when Bharata went toward the forest to bring Rama back, he reached the bank of the Ganga. There Guha stood guard with his boatmen. Seeing Bharata's huge army, Guha first became suspicious. "Has he come to attack Rama?" he wondered, and warned his warriors.

But when Bharata came and met him, his face showed pure grief and love. Bharata spoke humbly to Guha: "Friend, where did you see my brother Rama? Where did he stay?" Guha showed the place where Rama stayed. He also showed the grass bed on which Rama lay.

Bharata touched that grass bed, bowed and wept. "My brother lies on the ground; shall I be in a palace?" he lamented. Seeing this, Guha melted. "You are a brother worthy of Rama," he praised Bharata.

That night Bharata stayed with Guha on the bank of the Ganga. Guha gave him fruit and honey, and Bharata accepted gladly. "I am not a king; I have come here as Rama's younger brother," he said. In that simplicity Guha saw Rama's own nature.

Bharata accepted Guha as his own brother. The same affection that Rama had shown Guha was in Bharata. The hesitation Guha had felt on account of Bharata being Kaikeyi's son vanished in that moment. Bharata preserved the old friendship that had come through his brother.

All who saw Bharata's act, even those who had been his opponents, respected him. The quality by which he treated his brother's friend as his own friend won every heart. This is 'vizhaiyaar vizhaiyap paduba'.
