Valmiki Ramayana, Bala KandaKing Sagara and Asamanja
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. King Sagara of Ayodhya had a son named Asamanja, who was immature and cruel by nature. He would seize the children of the city, throw them into the Sarayu river and laugh as they struggled.
The townspeople came to the king in grief. Though it was his own son, Sagara chose justice. Unable to live in company with one who harmed the people, he banished Asamanja from the kingdom.
Asamanja's son Amshuman, by contrast, grew up good and brave, and won the people's love. It was he who later became king after Sagara. The resolve of a king who would not keep company with the wayward protected the land.
