Explanation

When we hear the word purity, we think of bathing, washing clothes and sweeping the house. Those matter. But Valluvar here speaks of a deeper purity: desirelessness is purity. Desire is the dirt of the mind. Like dust settling on a mirror, a mind covered with desire does not show truth in its clear form. When desire is wiped away the mind shines. So the verse hints that along with the outer bath an inner bath is needed.

The second part gives the way to that purity: 'vaaymai venda varum', it comes to one who longs for truthfulness. How so? When a person firmly loves truth, his mind will not accept false desires and scheming. One who tells the truth has no desires he needs to hide. Therefore truthfulness and desirelessness support each other.

The lengthened vowels in 'thooymai' and 'vaaymai' draw out the music of the line and stress their importance. Commentators take 'vaaymai' to mean truthful speech and also abiding in the true reality. Both meanings fit here.

In daily life this is easy to try. If for one day we attempt to speak without a falsehood, we shall see which lies are born of our desires. Behind every lie told for fame, for money or to escape, there stands a desire. One who keeps to truth will slowly let go of those desires. Truthfulness also brings a quiet ease: a person who has nothing to hide has nothing to guard, and a mind with nothing to guard is naturally clean. That is the purity Valluvar prizes, one that bathing alone cannot give.

A story

Harishchandra's Truth

The story of King Harishchandra is famous in the Markandeya Purana. Harishchandra, who ruled Ayodhya, was known for truthfulness. The sage Vishwamitra decided to test his resolve never to tell a lie, tradition says. Once Harishchandra dreamed that he gave away his entire kingdom to Vishwamitra. When the sage came the next day and asked for the gift, Harishchandra did not go back even on a word given in a dream.

Having given the kingdom, he went to Kashi with his wife Chandramati and his son Lohitashva to raise the gold for the sacrificial fee. With no other means to pay it, he sold his wife and son to a Brahmin. Then he himself became the bondsman of a man of the cremation ground and worked as a guard there. The man who had been a king now collected dues at the funeral pyres.

After some time, Chandramati came to the cremation ground carrying Lohitashva, who had died of a snake bite. Harishchandra's heart broke at the sight, yet he did not fail in his duty. 'Cremation can be done only if the due is paid,' he said. Chandramati had no money. She showed her marriage thread and begged him to accept it as the fee.

At that moment Harishchandra stood between his word and his love. He decided never to break his truthfulness. At the height of that resolve, says the Purana, the gods appeared. They revealed that it was all a test, revived Lohitashva and restored to Harishchandra his kingdom and wealth.

It is not that Harishchandra had no desire. But his desire for truth outweighed every other. Though kingdom, wealth and family were gone, the purity of keeping his word stood as his final wealth.

This story says that this is the purity that comes to one who longs for truth, as Valluvar says.

To reflect on

Think of one small untruth you told recently. What desire stood behind it, and what would honesty have cost or freed?
