Explanation

Here Valluvar gives a beautiful simile. Even if a tank is full of water, if it has no bund it will not hold; it will flow away everywhere and be wasted. Likewise, though there is wealth, the life of one who does not mingle with his kin will not last. That is the thought.

'Alavalaa' is mingling and associating closely. One who does not open his heart with relatives but lives aloof is 'alavalaavillaadhaan'. Though he has wealth, he is alone; he has no one with whom to share joy and sorrow.

The bund of a tank holds the water; so kin protect wealth and life. The wealth of one without kin support may be stolen easily, be lost to litigation or robbery, or be wasted because he himself does not know how to use it. Like a tank without bunds, his wealth will flow away.

The simile fits the mind too. Water needs a bund to stay in a tank; happiness needs kin to stay. Happiness does not stay with one without relations. So the bund that keeps wealth and well-being lasting is kin.

Therefore small acts such as eating together with relatives now and then, talking, enquiring after welfare and joining in festivals are not mere customs; they are the bunds of life.

In today's fast life, it is a reminder to those who do not set aside time for relations.

A story

Ravana Who Drove Away Kubera

From the Uttara Kanda of the Ramayana: Lanka was originally the city of Kubera. Kubera, son of the sage Vishravas, is lord of wealth. He had Lanka, the Pushpaka aircraft and all riches. Ravana was his half-brother. Both had the same father.

Ravana performed severe austerity and received boons from Brahma. Having gained strength, he went to his elder brother Kubera and demanded, "Give me Lanka; give me the Pushpaka too." Kubera, heeding his father's word, quietly withdrew. Having given Lanka and the Pushpaka to Ravana, he went to live in Alakapuri near Mount Kailasa.

But Ravana was not satisfied. He attacked Kubera and seized his Pushpaka aircraft. He lost the affection of kin. He did not respect his father's words nor his maternal relations. He insulted his brothers Kubera and Vibhishana.

Those who remained around him were rakshasas who stayed for fear or for gain. Because he had no kin bound by love, when danger came in war he had no true support. When Vibhishana, Kumbhakarna and others gave good counsel, he spurned them as well. In the end his wealth, city and clan were destroyed.

Though he had wealthy Lanka, he lacked the bund of kin's love, so his life, like a tank that has water but no bund, ran dry and was wasted.

Kubera lived peacefully with kin to whom he was affectionate and preserved his wealth. Ravana lost his relations and lost everything. This is a life-example of the verse's simile.
