Explanation

This verse takes a simple simile from nature. When a crow finds food it does not eat it alone in hiding; it caws, calls its kind and eats sharing with all. Likewise, Valluvar says, only those who share their wealth in the same way have wealth that grows.

The crow is a bird most people easily notice. This quality of it seems small but is subtle. When it gets food it could eat it alone; but it calls out. Its kind gather. It finds joy in sharing its happiness.

'Karavaa' means without hiding. 'Karandhu unbavan' is one who eats in hiding without others knowing. Sharing must be done openly and with joy. Help given hesitantly and with concealment does not grow a relationship.

'Anna neeraarkke ula' says that growth exists for people of this nature. Wealth stays with one who shares and eats. If one who eats in hiding gets wealth, it will not last, for he loses the support of his kin.

The beauty of this simile is that a great lesson can be learnt even from a small bird. Sharing a good thing we got, with joy, with relatives and neighbours, is human nature.

In our tradition, the custom of putting rice out for crows even today is a sign of such sharing.

A story

The Crow Laghupatanaka and His Friends

From the Panchatantra (Mitra-sampraptih): In a forest lived a crow named Laghupatanaka. It was by nature of a good mind that shares what it gets. One day it saw a flock of pigeons caught in a net a hunter had spread. The pigeons' chief, a pigeon named Chitragriva, consoled them.

The crow thought whether it could help the pigeons. Even if it could not help directly, it showed the pigeons the way to its friend Hiranyaka the mouse. With its sharp teeth the mouse gnawed and cut each pigeon's net and freed them. Thus the crow's friendship and sharing saved the pigeons' lives.

Friendship arose between the mouse and the crow. The crow shared the food it got with the mouse. Later a tortoise named Mantharaka and a deer named Chitranga joined the circle of friends. The four rejoiced, sharing food and help with one another.

Once the deer was caught in the hunter's net. The mouse cut the net. When the hunter came, the tortoise too was caught; the deer pretended to be dead to draw the hunter another way, and the mouse freed the tortoise. The four saved one another's lives.

Had the crow eaten its food in hiding, it would not have gained so many friends. The habit of sharing gave it the wealth of friendship and protection. Thus did the prosperity of the crow that calls and eats together grow.

The tale shows that kin is not only blood relations but a web of love created by sharing.
