Explanation

That relatives separate happens in life. This verse tells how to take them back. If the cause of the separation is understood and removed, they will come back of their own accord with no other reason, says Valluvar.

'Amaraamai' is not being pleased in the mind, a dissatisfaction in the heart. There must have been some grievance within the relatives for them to separate. It may be that they were neglected, their worth was not honoured, a word was harsh, or the division of property was unfair. That grievance is the root of the separation.

Many busy themselves with blaming those who left and with anger toward them. They think, "They made the mistake; they must come." But Valluvar asks the leader first to seek the cause. If the fault is on his side, he must correct it.

There is a subtlety in 'kaaranam indri varum'. After the grievance is gone, no other reason or other talk is needed to call them. If there is love in the heart, they will return naturally when the obstacle is removed.

It also teaches us to let go of pride. If the leader says, "Why should I go to them?" the relationship will not return. Sometimes the first step must be his. But the first step is not asking pardon but removing the cause.

It is practical advice in families, friendships and business partnerships alike.

A story

Balarama and Subhadra's Marriage

From the Mahabharata (Adi Parva) and the Bhagavata Purana: During his exile Arjuna came to Dwaraka and saw and desired Krishna's sister Subhadra. Krishna knew Arjuna's good qualities. He advised him to carry Subhadra away. Yadava custom allowed it.

But Krishna's elder brother Balarama had intended to marry Subhadra to Duryodhana. When he learned that Arjuna had carried off his sister, Balarama became furiously angry. He felt insulted that it was done without his consent. He tried to gather the Yadava forces to attack Arjuna. A situation arose in which a split in the Yadava clan was possible.

Krishna understood the root of his elder brother's grievance. Balarama did not hate Arjuna; he thought it was a slight to his honour that it was done without asking him. Krishna spoke humbly to him. "Brother, Arjuna is worthy in family and virtue. Even if we had asked, this marriage would have ended thus. There is no lack at all to your honour," he said.

Then the wedding was conducted formally, with the honours and rites due to Balarama. Arjuna and Subhadra bowed to Balarama and received his blessing. Balarama's heart rejoiced. The anger left him. He gave the couple great gifts and sent them to Indraprastha.

What Krishna did was to learn the cause of his brother's dissatisfaction and remove it. So the separation ended and the relationship returned. Balarama again behaved lovingly as the elder of the family.

This event is a good example that when the cause is known and removed, an angry relative will return of his own accord.
